If you're in Heidelberg I'm jealous. Can we maybe now dispense with the old cliché that Germans have no sense of humour?
I thought that as well, many years ago when I first moved here but have since revised that view. Amazing what a bit of lived experience and knowledge does to preconceptions. Sure, there are some dour and humour-free people here in Germany but the idea of the humourless Hun is mostly a product of ignorance and more than a smidgen of smugness.

Yes, a couple of times, most recently in 2019 to tick off Sandhausen (I'm trying to do all the grounds in the top three divisions). I love it there. I have a mate who is studying at the University. Everything you say about Germany I agree with. Which is why I'm jealous. The clue indeed. is in the name. Have you ever visited?
Still have family and friends (including my son) in the UK and come back for matches as often as possible. Our summer holiday plans are only ever made once the fixtures are out - I have a very understaning wife.
But yes, I do like living in a country with a grown up government with a sense of civic duty rather than self promotion, a press which is largely intelligent, factual and balanced, an education system which - though not perfect, is fit for purpose and a football clubs not owned by oligarchs and human rights abusers.
When I look at what's happening in the Old Country, I despair. Ye Gods, this government, what a shower of.... But I'll stop now before I'm accused of more than just a "smidgen of smugness"
O, and in case your were wondering (you probably weren't) of course I'll be screaming for England on Tuesday.
Ah, Sandhausen - followed their heroic effort to avoid relegation this season - only on screen of course. Reminded me a bit of many a Boro end of season. Used to go there now and then with a mate, and will do again when allowed. It's just so relaxing going to a match when you support a team, but are not in a state of continuous mental anxiety as per Boro games.Yes, a couple of times, most recently in 2019 to tick off Sandhausen (I'm trying to do all the grounds in the top three divisions). I was offered a job in Stuttgart in the late 80s. I've often regretted not taking it, even more so after Brexit. The clue indeed. is in the name. Have you ever visited?

Who knows where the river flows? Sounds like your NY life has been ok ;-)I was offered a job in Stuttgart in the late 80s. I've often regretted not taking it, even more so after Brexit.
Heidle. Do you have a boro and bayern Munich badge on your car. Followed such a car in Rosenburg when on a trip out while visiting my daughter in stuttgart.Who knows where the river flows? Sounds like your NY life has been ok ;-)
I've resisted getting involved in the myriad Brexit "discussions" here as I am so raw about it - even now. I have though, always enjoyed your thoughtful and factual contributions to the debate.
And for those who would tell me to move on, I won't and don't want to get over the lying, deceitful and reprehensible nature of how people were gulled into voting for this fact and reason free clusterf*ck. Especially as the charlatans are tightening their grip on the country.
Even last night on BBC, looking back at the referendum, one of the main architects of Vote Leave admitted all their energy and resources went into winning (what? I wonder) and none into assessing the impact of leaving.
Looking in from the outside sometimes offers a clearer view, and I can't believe how Brexit has completely destroyed so much of what made me really proud to be British.
I spent a year working in Germany, mostly Lindau but also spent a lot of time in Karlsruhe, so visited Heidelberg quite a few times, nice spot. Can we maybe now dispense with the old cliché that Germans have no sense of humour?
