Howson 'not too sure' of Boro future

I’d offer Jonny and Peltz a 1 year contract, but I could see someone like Rotherham or if they come up Sheff Weds offering Jonny 2 yrs. He has been a great signing for us and if he chose to leave for pastures new on a longer contract he would have my support and thanks.

Sol would be great to keep around as a coach and mentor if there was a spot to shoehorn him in, but we need a left footed CB and perhaps Wood needs some game time in the cups and integrating into the squad as cover. It’ll be interesting to see whether Paddy remains as CB or moves into Jonny’s spot. There is always the possibility that a Prem team may come in for him mind, given his versatility. Dael, Tav and Watmore need tying down on contracts too as they only have one more year left.

I think someone comes in for Jonny Howson and blows us out of the water in terms of length of contract to be offered. Peltier will leave for more game time. Sol Bamba stays on to coach, Paddy McNair moves to the right hand side of a back three, Wood need to go out on loan to a lower league side, this season was a bit of a waste imo and he can’t afford to do that again. Dael and Tav could well be playing in the prem next season (hopefully for us) Watmore is taken for granted a bit by fans I think.. he could defo be snatched away from us.

Big summer coming up regardless of what league we end up in!

Dijksteel can’t lose his place on the right to McNair, I think he’s the better player to be honest. Paddy’s form has dropped off a bit but probably because he’s knackered. I wouldn’t be massively surprised to see him go, especially if I came to selling one him, Tav, Fry or Jones.

Jonny has had an amazing season but I think he’ll be offered a better contract elsewhere. The midfield needs freshening up - we won’t get better performances and results keeping the midfield the same IMO.

Agree col, Peltiers had a good season

Wood has been given so many chances and consistently failed. Couldn't get game time at Crewe or Hibs so why are we expecting him to make it at Boro?

I think this has been Howsons best season. I dont know what the point of waiting until the end of the season is, and I would have him back in an instant, no matter which league we are in.

Peltier and Bamba are good squad players for the championship. I guess much depends on what each of their wage is, and what sort of squad size WIlder wants.

Why would you not give our player of the year 2 years? No signs of him struggling, plays 90 mins week in week out.

Unless the sports scientists know something we don't the only reason you wouldn't is because of what it says on his birth certificate. Which seems a bit daft given some of the contracts we've given to absolute dross in the past.

Nathan wood is highly thought of, you say he has been given so many chances, yet that is not true. He has played 12 times in games for Boro’s first team some clearly as a substitute. He is only a 19 yr old, I think he has a bright future ahead of him, but he is at an important stage where he needs to play more and deliver on his potential. Ideally a loan to January where he played regularly would be ideal, then integrate him into our squad from January assuming all went well that is, or use him as a squad player with occasional game time and by starting him in cup games for experience.

I'd certainly be happy to offer Johnny another two years he has been immense at times and never worse than reliable which would make him ideal even if it is as backup to a new signing. Don't forget he can put in a decent shift at RB too.

Howson moved back to around Leeds a few years, to get his family settled and his kids in schools for the long term. At that stage, he wasn't sure if he'd be staying here beyond his current contract, and there was one or two talks regarding a few Yorkshire teams. He then got offered the contract he signed, but the commute to training and back is obviously pretty long each day. I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves to be closer to home, but I'd love him to stay.

You could understand if he left if we are offering a year and maybe reduced terms. It's the last move of his career.

It's very much like George when we offered him a year and brum offered 2. That said I imagine he's more than financially set and does he want to move or the hassle it brings. Then again plenty of 'local' Yorkshire clubs would take him.

I really hope he stays no matter what league we are in. Yet you can't expect him to chug along on 1 year extensions as hardly security. So maybe a year with an option of another (rather an an out right 2 years). It means both parties have a bit of flexibility.

That said i simply can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want him to stay. Wilder always raving about him and never misses a match or injured. Some 33 year olds you'd think 'no chance'. Yet he's as fit as he's ever been. Give him Ameobi's money😂

Probably pretty limited in clubs that are closer though. Say if he signed say, for a Sheffield team, he'd probably save 30 mins on his commute (depends where he lives, if it's north Leeds which is generally more affluent, then maybe not even that). Would that be enough to trump a decision for footballing reasons?

Probably only Leeds or Huddersfield where it'd make a massive difference to his commute.

2 years at a side where he'd expect to be challenging for promotion or 2 years at a mid table side for the sake of cutting your commute a bit?

Obviously would depend who was in for him, but him being settled in Leeds might actually work in our favour. Rules out a lot of other clubs.

2 years contract has to be a minimum and the Club would be daft to lose him. I would also be quite upset to see him go too.

Aye, get your points mate, and hopefully you're right about it working in our favour. I love the guy, and think it would be great for Boro if he stayed.

I'm not privvy to his training arrangements (that info above has come from a mate who knows him), but I would imagine he's that much of a professional that we wouldn't require him at the training ground 100% of the time to keep himself fit and right, so even dropping a day or so of a commute may be good for him.
