Howson 'not too sure' of Boro future

I heard from a pal in corporate circles at the game at the weekend that Howson has not renewed his box for next season. May not mean anything, but it may be an indication as its currently used by his family .

I guess it all comes down to budgets and what division we are in. He still looks fit as a fiddle and could even do a job in the prem. for a year. I'd probably give him the same money for another year, but he probably wants another two years on the same dosh. Tough call, which will have to be made in the summer.

I wonder if he's holding out to see if we get promoted.

He might want one more crack at the Premier League before he retires and might feel Premier League clubs will be interested.

He might also be waiting to see if Leeds come down and fancy taking him back...... (wouldn't that be bitter sweet).

Not sure that means anything. Surely he'll only renew once he knows he's staying?

After lads like sol pelts and Taylor showing their importants as fringe players giving howsen an extension should be a formality. Obviously it may come down to money in the end

I hink it all depends on the figures; if CW sees him as part of his foret team plans, the it makes sense to give him a contract, maybe even over two years, but he's already earning relatively big money, so it depends on how much we are willing to pay v what he can get elsewhere.

From a purely footballing point of view then he gets a contract, but that has to work within the budget that CW has available to him and to be fair we don't know if anyone else is on the list to bring in.

We were linked with quite a few centre mids in January so I assume we are in the market still.

For me he's been a touch underwhelming in the whole, he isn't what I expected we'd get. Other than Crooks the goal contribution from midfield has been woeful again this season, and Howson as an ever present pretty much is obviously a part of that problem

He has however had a cracking season and he's super fit and an excellent pro who can cover a number of positions. I'd have no real complaints of him signing on for another couple of years as club captain and a rotation option. He's not much of a captain on the field for me, we also seem to lack power, aggression, athleticism in midfield (and central defence too to be honest) and I would like that addressed.

Wigan interested according to this
I bet they are.
Tvvat of a drive that every day.

Howson has had a very good season in that position. Although he can cover other positions, it is very much his best spot.
If we stay down I'd give him 2 years on slightly reduced terms.
If we go up I'd give him a year on the same terms.
Either way he would be retained I reckon.

can see sheff wed interested if he wants to be near leeds
It's not that near Leeds. Still about an hour's drive (depending on whereabouts in Leeds he lives).

If he lived in North Leeds, which is probably more likely as it's a more affluent area, then he might save 15 - 20 mins on his drive to work compared to driving to Rockliffe.

Be a bit weird if 20 mins off his commute was the deciding factor, but stranger things have happened I suppose.

Probably pretty limited in clubs that are closer though. Say if he signed say, for a Sheffield team, he'd probably save 30 mins on his commute (depends where he lives, if it's north Leeds which is generally more affluent, then maybe not even that). Would that be enough to trump a decision for footballing reasons?

Probably only Leeds or Huddersfield where it'd make a massive difference to his commute.

2 years at a side where he'd expect to be challenging for promotion or 2 years at a mid table side for the sake of cutting your commute a bit?

Obviously would depend who was in for him, but him being settled in Leeds might actually work in our favour. Rules out a lot of other clubs.
I can add a bit more to this, JH lives about a mile from me in a delightful little village between Bradford and Leeds. He can be on the motorway in under 10 mins. The training ground is about 1hr 10 on a good run, so not too bad a commute.
Sheffield would be about 30-35 mins and Rotherham largely the same.

However, Bradford City are going to be throwing some money around this year and have some very lofty ambitions; whilst a move to League 2 would seem mental, they will certainly be looking at players like JH im sure.
