In 2006 when McClaren left, who would have been perfect to take over?

The German who sent his CV was Felix Megate who went on to manage Fulham.

My choice at the time was Terry Venables. If we were paying Viduka big money I would have made him an offer he could not have turned down.

from memory we offered Martin O’Neil the job he turned us down.

from memory we perused Martin O’Neil and he turned us down.
He did turn us down so we turned to Southgate

From memory, Gibson didn't want a new manager/head coach bringing his own people in, possibly because our academy was in its pomp, possibly because he knew we were at the limit of financial investment

He joined Villa instead.

Given one of Gibson's red lines is not poaching another clubs manager, we have to consider who was actually available.

Souness & O'Leary were available having been sacked by Newcastle & Villa.
Lippi was available having left Italy.
Gary Megson 😱 was available having left Forest

I always thought the German that we were close to appointing was Ottmar Hitzfeld, but that could have just been spurious local rumour at the time.

To back up Erimus, I'm sure Gibson is on record as offering it to Venables, who turned it down but came out with the infamous line "the answer might be right under your nose". Which ultimately led to the Southgate appointment.

I would have loved Graeme Souness at the time, but he is, with Juninho, my all time Boro favourite, so part of me is relieved he didn't get the opportunity.
I think he would have done well, but acknowledge his time at Newcastle ended badly.

I was like that with Mogga, I knew when he came here there was a chance he would hav been hounded out & tahts what happened, I didnt want Souness either for the very same reasons

I thought it was Hitzfield as well, who wanted to bring his own staff provoking that "Middlesbrough on the Rhine"comment from Gibson.

There's a thing on the Guardian knowledge page today about managers who survive thrashings, citing Hassenhuttl getting beat 9-0 by Leicester. McClaren gets a mention because we were thumped 7-0 down at Arsenal in January, and reached the UEFA cup final in May, and he was England manager a few weeks later.

I too thought the German was Hitzfeld. Our club would not be what it is today if it wasn't for Gibson, but i still cannot believe he came out with the following:

“I looked at a German coach,” said Gibson. “He wanted to bring in a German fitness coach, German masseur, German players. We were going to become Middlesbrough-on-Rhine. It didn’t feel right."

German players? Wasn't that the year they went on to win the world cup?

I know it's come up before but Gibson's red line on poaching managers absolutely does my head in and massively restricts appointments (and for what benefit?) We do it for players so why not for managers. I'm aware there will be compensation involved etc but the right manager at the right price, just seems like a no brainer.

I think it came out a few years back that it was Magath, but i can't recall the circumstances. Who knows he may have done well, but at Fulham he failed badly and was generally considered to be a lunatic (advocating rubbing cheese on an injury for example)

No Gibson said we had an excellent back room staff and wanted to retain them. Unfortunaterl most of them were gone within 6 months. Round, Barron etc.
