Industry on Teesside...

Reading about Mitsubishi closing today and potential other Chemical plants closing on Teesside are blaming the gas prices making production unviable. Why are the government sitting back and letting this happen? Are companies using the gas prices as an excuse to close ageing assets? I know CF Fertilizers are shipping Ammonia in from the USA as its cheaper than running their plant, that to me sounds ridiculous and has got to be harming the UK Economy.

Can someone explain to me why the Government should intervene when a Company cannot sort it's own house out. Mitsubishi are Japanese and a world wide issue with gas prices.
200 plus employee's out of work and one of the main factors is that energy costs are so high it makes running the plants unviable. Surely the government step in and enforce cheaper energy rather than another industry being closed and flattened and 200+ people potentially out of work. There is no way we should be using the term 'energy crisis' when energy companies are reporting record breaking profits. Its not a crisis its a racket! Also France capped energy rises to 4% so definitely not a worldwide issue...

We have the answer under our feet & under the north sea but the powers that be say we shouldn't use it, it's much better to import energy & export jobs.

Thats another worry. Starmer stating he will stop North Sea Exploration to keep the wet wipes happy, whilst pushing us further in to the reliance on other countries.

I own an engineering company in Teesside. So I will wade in with my two pennies if I may?

I employ around 20 people and we manufacture goods for the offshore renewable sector, oil and gas sector, subsea sector, pharmaceutical sector and food and beverage production. We turnover a 7 figure sum year on year, of which raw material equate to around 30% of that figure. meaning the rest is pure manufacturing turnover. Goods from scratch, if you will.

I think the region has its challenges, but then so does the rest of world. There is a lot of positivity and vibrancy surrounding the area if you cut through the negative noise.
We certainly have our challenges. My energy bills have gone up 299% this year and next year is forecast to be 100% above what I was paying last year. I could mope or blame the government but none of it will do any good, so we just have to cut our cloth to suit.

Take a drive through skippers lane, Riverside park, Thornaby industrial estate. There is a lot of good in the area. We just need to stick together so we can all come out the other side smiling!

Just proud to live, work, employ and fly the 'made in Teesside' flag.

Great stuff, but your energy costs didn't need to be so high, that's a government choice.

There's a lot of industrial construction going on near me in Billingham at Fuji so we're getting new jobs too, no doubt that weasel Houchen will be claiming the credit.

I too work in Industry on Teesside and have done since I left school in '85. Plants have closed and new ones have been built throughout that period regardless of the colour of the Government in power at the time. However, Teesside is as buoyant now as I have seen it in a long time with lots of potential new opportunities, some of them massive such as the BP NZT and Hydrogen opportunities plus multiple associated projects and schemes. Getting government backing to develop the new energy mix into workable schemes and committing to build them is what will be key. I have seen several "false dawns" for industry on Teesside over the years but I genuinely feel that we are potentially on the cusp of something major......but it is reliant on the government getting its Energy and Net Zero strategy strategy right and then putting its money where its mouth is.

its absolute madness, same with coal, we use 6 million tons a year in the UK and every ounce is imported, at the NYMR we have to source coal from Columbia, Australia, Kazakhstan and the cost has gone from £150 per ton to around £500, what are we trying to do, kill all of our industries off. We also have the worlds most expensive Electricity I believe.

Completely agree. Jeremy Hunt announced targeted support for SME's around February time and we all waited with baited breath. I am still waiting!

However, my reply wasn't politically motivated.

I just want to champion the area and tell you it isn't as bad as certain elements would have you (and want you) to believe. It's not perfect, but then it never is.
Proud to contribute to the region and our GDP in some small way.

I'll deal with the energy prices the best I can and fight each day like I have done since I bought the business in 2004.
