Infantino's laughable defence of Qatar

“Between 1662 and 1807 British and British colonial ships purchased an estimated 3,415,500 Africans. Of this number, 2,964,800 survived the 'middle passage' and were sold into slavery in the Americas. “

The sad thing is, there will genuinely be people who believe that spiel as well.

"We can't criticise today because of what was done in the past" is such a common argument when something bad is happening in the world.
It's the whole concept of don't judge by your own western standards well ok if you are some poverty stricken third world country but they are a hugely rich country utilising all the trappings of modern technology

I agree with him. I find the western worlds sanctimonious lecturing of other countries nauseating and breathtakingly hypocritical.
We are the broken society. Amoral, corrupt, decadent and violent.
We are the countries who solved our problems in the 20th century by sacrificing hundreds of millions of lives and then patting ourselves on the back for it.
We have murdered, enslaved, and interfered with devastating consequences for centuries, including this one.
We elect repeatedly the most obviously corrupt dishonest self serving politicians.
We are casually and knowingly destroying the planet.
Do I agree in any way that Qatar is a suitable country to host the World Cup? Nope
Do I think we are in a position to be lecturing other countries? Do I ****.

How long do western countries need to be perfect for until we can voice criticism of non existent rights for women, imprisonment based on sexuality, and huge numbers of deaths of workers constructing the stadiums?

Absolutely. The migrant workers in Qatar are often referred to as slaves. They are not slaves. They chose to go over there to work. Perhaps ask the question why they would go to work in such dreadful conditions. Many of the countries they travel from are former British possessions. Possessions whose wealth was transferred to this country, which we have and still benefit from. I mean capitalism is based on exploitation. How many of the things you own and consume are free of explotation. The west has every right to critisize Qatar's human rights. But we can't be looking down on them.

No argument with the comments on British occupation.
I would doubt however that the workers are aware of how bad the conditions are, or the fact that they'll have their passports taken away. They may go there willingly, but they are effectively turned into slaves on arrival. I doubt very much that that's the picture that painted to them when they are recruited

The logic is great.

No one is perfect, therefore no one can criticise anyone for anything ever, and anyone who ever points out the appauling issues in the host country that bribed good money into the pockets of FIFA officials are hypocrits because they come from a country that once did something awful. That puts an end to everything. Nothing to see here. Move on.

If you look it up the workers were kept like slaves until a law change for 2018, they had passports confiscated couldn’t leave or change jobs and couldn’t get an exit visa without their employers permission.

The long pauses and his poise suggest it was rehearsed - probably scripted for him by his quatari paymasters. I think he probably thought it would have gone the opposite way to what it did on the eve of the tournament KO.

Absolutely joke of a speech.

FIFA are corrupt to the core.
it should be laughable, but it's really not funny. Is he really comparing the abuse of women, gays, non-muslims, in Qatar as him getting bullied for having freckles!?! absolute nob'ed.

Is he really saying that we should turn a blind eye to current Qatari abuses because our grandparents were part of the British empire? Absolutely out of touch clown who needs to be removed from his position of power.

I'll criticise the past behaviour of the British Empire even though I wasn't alive, so won't take blame for it, I'll also criticise Qatar and Infantile the utter c*((womble

Gingers do have it tough at school !! It’s just a shame there is no one who can step in and remove FIFA and start again with decent honest people. In most other professions this guy would have t in stand down but I hear he is being re-elected unopposed!

I can't recall the last time a ginger haired person was sent to prison and executed for their hair colour....that does happen in Qatar to gay people. So lets stop the ridiculous false equivalence here, it's insulting to compare the two

I suspect sponsors will have something to say about this. I'm sure there are some very nervous people in FIFA about the fall out from this tournament and some people in the marketing departments taking some calls from official sponsors like Bud, Visa, Adidas and Coca Cola.
