Ivermectin

Surely this is positive news right?

A generic, off-the-shelf drug already available in abundance that looks like it may well drastically reduce the risk of covid death?

It's on the financial times website (so I'd assume a fairly credible, non-sensational source) but weirdly I can't find it on any of the other usual news sites (if anyone does have links let me know - I had a search and couldn't find anything).

(EDIT: It does have a paywall restriction but the first couple of articles you can usually read without having to fill out any kind of subscription form).

Cheap antiparasitic could cut chance of Covid-19 deaths by up to 75%

Researchers hail ivermectin findings but say more studies needed on using drug

They havent published the meta-analysis yet. When they do I expect it may be considered more closely.

On it's own the data I have seen has been fairly low in quality/ numbers of patients and the outcomes being tracked have not been quite varied.

I expect if the meta-analysis is sound that it will be considered and the UK Recovery trial has been very good at taking up any promising drugs and adding them to their treatments helping to build the research evidence and testing the efficacy of the drugs.

Been gaining traction for a few weeks, still needs much more research / trials from what I had read

It's been used for parasitic treatment for years without producing any horrendous side effects amongst those it was prescribed to treat according to its makers.

If it is safe in the majority of healthy people, why not give it to them & use the expensive vaccination treatments for the old & vulnerable in the first instance.

Sure, give everyone a vaccination eventually if needed, but if this can do 75% of the job on the cheap then use it for that purpose.

There was a similar article in The Times a day or two ago. I think I’m right in saying Invermectin is only approved for use topically, if so I imagine there’ll be a lengthy approval period. But it’s brilliant all this research is being done.
