Jack Charlton in his own words

Just about the last of a golden crop of managers, our Jack. Can you imagine sharing an evening with Jack, Brian Clough, Bill Shankly, Tommy Docherty and maybe Joe Mercer? I would just sit and listen intently and not say a word.

I would add another Yorkshireman to that superb list above, Scarborough’s own Bill Nicholson, A true gentleman according to my dad, who had experienced the pleasure of his company.

Once went to an evening (I think it was for George Hardwick) and Cloughie was a guest. It was shortly after a home tonking at the hands of Aston Villa. He wasn't scheduled to give a speech, but being Cloughie he couldn't resist. It was short, and pretty much in its entirety this is it.

If I were the manager I'd have got the team in the dressing room at half time and held up a ball. You know what this is? IT'S A BALL! And what do you do with it? YOU KICK IT!. TO THE BUGGERS IN THE SAME COLOUR SHIRTS AS YOU.

And then he sat down.

The Matt Forde story about Cloughie on the Quickly Kevin podcast is by far the best Cloughie story, and also pretty sure its not made up like the infamous Dean Saunders one.
