Ken Clarke - '"dangerously close to elected dictatorship"

What you have done there is a lengthy post about the people, but nothing about the policies of any of the parties. I also fall into this trap quite often.

I personally think we desperately need a change, the stuck record of incompetence and corruption from the current governemnt needs to be changed.
I used to do it a lot too ;)

I didn't mean to go into detail. I was just trying to say I would have preferred one outcome over another. Badly, I'll admit 🤡 ..

I am sure there would be a lot in terms of policy in a Starmer/Burnham Govt I would not agree with, but I have no doubt I would vote for them if the choice was there over what is currently on offer. Just to see some form of stability and competence would be a start.

But we do need a change for those reasons you stated, especially.

I did say, party jokingly, that if we don't get the tories out at the next election, it may be the last election we have, The tories are dismantling the democatic process bit by bit.

The politicising of the judiciary is coming, which will place parliament outside of the law.

The things that are happening now in the UK are the same steps that happened in Germany and Italy in the 30's.

There's plenty to concern people about the Police, Crime and Sentencing Bill but it's not akin to 1930s Germany. Labour can't use that in opposition because it's not the case and too many people will know it. How much of the Pritti Patel additions will make it past the Lords is open to debate.

It isn't the same as gerrmany or italy by the late 30's but it is exactly how those countries moved to dictatorship. And bare in mind there is more going on than just the police bill.

I think this is the second reading at the lords, I am not sure how much oomph they have to send it back to parliament. I am not sure of the numberr of readings before they are obliged to pass it into law.

i'm not understanding that line, care to elaborate on how ' it isnt the same' & ' but it is exactly' - are compatible ?
Move towards control of the media, make protestations illeagal, have the police under government control and give them powers that have nothing to do with detecting or preventing crime.
