Labour to oppose Conservative corporation tax rises

I can understand taxing the big companies who may have made a profit through the lockdown. My small business hasnt made a penny, or if it has it is from grants received to keep us afloat. Then again havent made anything to pay tax on.

Becoming more Tories than the Tories....
well that might be the message that some wish to project but it's nowhere near the truth. We are in a massive economic crisis. Tories are trying to control the government debt, by paying down on some of it now rather than later, but that will cost jobs as businesses need to shed workers to keep profitable. Labour want to protect workers and pay down the debt later when the economy is healthier.

Seems pretty standard position really, once you go past publicity seeking headlines and a very veneer level of analysis.

Shadow Treasury minister James Murray has said clearly on Politics Live that the Labour Party would not support any tax increases in the next budget.
Yet doesn't seem to have an issue with Middlesbrough council raising council taxes whilst people are losing their jobs or are on furlough.
Which I appreciate is a Tory and Labour problem.

Councils all over the country, of all political hues, are raising council taxes and adding on other charges such as the social care payment. Not just a Middlesbrough or Labour or Tory problem as you say.

I know mate. It stinks.

Lots of precepts - I have the social care one, there was one the other week for policing in the north east that I saw you will be paying. In London the mayor is adding more charges, plus extending congestion charges and so on. If these people can’t get money from the gvt they come to us. Needs to be controlled - I wouldn’t mind I find the service from my council the worst it’s ever been.

What stinks more is that the Tories allowed this because people who don't know better blame the local council rather than correctly pointing the finger at central government who have slashed local authority budgets by billions since 2010. Some councils receive about 40-50% of what they did in 2010.

The cowards don't want to take the responsibility of decimating councils.

So the Trillions the country now owes to pay for the pandemic will be left for the next generation or two to repay. Interesting philosophy by Labour Party and Tory rebels.

Corporation tax is more of a hit to smaller businesses, not big businesses so this is good by Labour.

Big businesses can avoid corporation tax, by diverting funds left right and centre and also out of the UK, so whether big business is paying 19% of ÂŁ0 or 25% of ÂŁ0 it's irrelevant. Brexit played a big part in this, as it facilitates big business tax dodging, where as the EU wanted to try and prevent it.

The smaller companies cannot afford the infrastructure to do the tax-dodging/ diverting, as it's just not cost-effective when you're smaller.

Think of it like this:
You're putting up income tax on low earners, they can't claim back any extra, so they pay more tax
You're putting up income tax on high earners, so they claim back more tax, so they pay the same tax
