LIV GOLF and the PGA to merge.

Ahhh......good old Saudi Arabia. The cheeky new upstarts in the sporting world, trying their best to play fair and have a seat at the top sporting table.

Nothing to do with $$$$$$, sportswashing etc. Just grossly misunderstood and just wants to compete equally wherever it can, given the opportunity.

Just glad their rulers/government/princes etc play no part in this and all the money comes from privately funded companies thus playing fair and not breaking any rules.

Hurrah!

🙄🙄

Not a fan of how Liv is funded (same as I aren't about the Saudi-backed footy teams, or the last world cup etc), but at least they're trying to modernise things a bit, which golf probably needs.

I dont agree that golf needs "modernising" in an attempt to attract more spectators. On the evidence so far the crowds turning up at these Liv events in their new format have been paltry.

I am not sure why some people find the need for golf to be modernised such as the darts new format, or Twenty20. Golf has a huge range of different formats all year round with team games, international competitions, individual tournaments and mixed-male/female tournaments. Having said that, it always has and always should be an heavily-based individual sport which pulls in large crowds across the World.

The areas of modernisation are desperately required at regional and local club level - I dare say there are still some Clubs which have men only bars and you can't wear socks lower than your ankle. Having said that, I was sat watching the DP Tour coverage at the weekend and found it incredible how the likes of Mark Roe and Richard Boxall still occupy a commentary box.

Sickener for those who stayed loyal and resisted Liv money
Surely this probably means more money for them all, maybe a reduction of events and 4 round tourneys, which they will probably appreciate?

The modernisation should help it appeal to younger folk, which golf really needs, this could get viewers up, and then even more money/ sponsors etc.

The others might have done them a favour, by risking it etc.

Golf needs to attract more spectators, and young viewers and players especially, loads of golf clubs have a problem with this.

Of course Liv won't have the same number of spectators as the majors etc, they nowhere near as well established or have the same quality of the field, but this could help this, if done the right way.

The PGA had a monopoly on everything and were stuck in their ways like basically all of golf is. It's not like in football where each of the leagues have its own monopoly and then they all come together for European competitions and world cups etc, in golf it's the PGA or nothing, which isn't really right.

I don't care about darts, so can't comment on that, but 20/20 has really helped get more younger players involved, who also then go on to play one day and tests etc. It's not made the test standard any worse, and the overspill has made test cricket more attacking, which is far more entertaining than guiding the ball around at two an over.

I'm not even a fan of the 20/20 format, but some people like it, fair enough, the more the merrier, but nobody can deny that it's helped make test cricket more entertaining.

Club and regional level won't modernise on their own though, this has been proven, hopefully modernisation at the top has a trickle own effect, and it's certainly worth a try.

The way some old folk speak to younger folk at golf courses is a joke, never mind how they treat women etc, which has been painfully slow to change. It's things like that which stopped me bothering with any competitions etc. The atmosphere of it just doesn't sit well with me, and don't get me started on the ludicrous dress codes of some places. Same with the "posh" courses etc, it's just all so clicky.

To be honest I rarely watch golf as it bores the hell out of me on TV, love playing mind, but watching and playing are like two different things to me with golf, and no other sport is really like that (for me anyway).

The PGA Tour and DP World Tour's shock merger with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) will ultimately be "good for golf", says Rory McIlroy.

Not a total surprise that comment from McIlroy. May be true, but he is likely to get a hefty 'loyalty' bonus at some point from all the LIV money, so positive for him compared to some of the other rank and file PGA members. However, he refused a big LIV fee, so maybe he 'deserves' it!

There's too much golf. I agree it could be modernised. 4 day events are hard to keep up wit. I love watching golf but I only really watch the majors because there is too much. If I wanted to watch any other tours like LIV or DP there just isn't the time. It's impossible to watch it all so some shorter events would be appreciated.

To be honest I watch way more golf on Youtube these days of non-professionals. I like the shot by shot approach, the players explaining the thought process behind each shot and the short form competitions etc. It's much easier to consume on a lunch break etc than a 4 day professional event.

I'm not a real golf fan, I've never played other than at Eston Rec and Prissick Base but I do watch the majors and personally feel they should stay the same. I don't think I have missed a Masters or Ryder Cup match for some time and make sure I am able to sit and watch the whole of these events. Like most sports, I have some interest in it but am not a massive fan.

P.S. I tell a lie, I did play around once at Pontefract whilst working at Selby.

I am a self-proclaimed golf nause so watch any golf that I can - generally most of the PGA Tour weekend play. The Open I will happily sit watch wall-to-wall as it is.

Same, but the guys I mainly watch are pro's or instructors, but they all say they would get hammered by a tour pro (and often do when playing against them), which as you know is a different level altogether. Mainly watch Shiels, Crossfield, Finch etc, basically taught myself by watching them to be honest.

I like Tubes VLOG's as well, especially the ones with Bullard etc, who can seriously play.
