Liverpool fans

Listening to Henry Winter this morning there are reasons to believe that it wasn’t just ticketless Liverpool fans that caused the issues.

The absence of an outer security cordon to check tickets before getting to the entrances was one - why not as they had been used in Kiev and Porto. As a consequence it was evident that local youths had become involved - intent on causing trouble.

Listened to a very disturbing interview with a father and son this morning who witnessed chaotic organisation and indiscriminate gendarmes spraying anybody with pepper canisters. UEFA will come under pressure today for a full review but too late for all those genuine fans who spent fortunes not to in the end see the game.

The problem was. There was tonnes of fans online bragging about fake tickets. So uefa will have enforced stringent security checks that will take longer to get through.

Apparently up to 15k arrived at the ground with either no tickets or fake ones. That's what caused the backlog.

I guess genuine ticket holders then get frustrated. Also we all know as fans you leave it until the last min staying in the Pig Iron. Whist many are saying they arrived 2 hours before I'm sure many rocked up last min.

It still doesn't excuse pepper spray. Yet it's what foreign police do. I mean at times I wish our lot were as heavy handed.

Have you got examples of this bragging? Seems pretty stupid to me to brag to the world you have a fake ticket. Like that moron above who managed to get his pensioner father in (that’s not stringent security). I see he’s deleted his Twitter account.

He can expect a knock fairly soon.

Whatever happened, who started it, police OTT reaction loads of innocent fans were sadly caught up it.......many with genuine tickets. Thousands travelling without tickets (and fake ones) and clearly inadequate security measures, the outcome was not unexpected. Add sun and a day on the booze into the mix .......😬😬

Genuine fans on TV saying that they turned up 2 hours early, had genuine tickets, were not let in, were held for hours, were pepper sprayed and charged by the police. But OP thinks that this was those fans fault?

It appears to be similar in to the chaotic scenes at Wembley last summer. Lots of fans without tickets taking a chance to get in regardless.

However, there are a few prominent people expressing disbelief at how badly organised it was. Gary Lineker, Kelly Cates and a few others were caught up in it all.

I suspect the truth will be a combination of several factors as is usually the case.

Those with no tickets and fake tickets caused the backlog at the turnstiles. Liverpool fans with genuine tickets should be blaming those with fakes and no tickets for even attempting to access the ground.

Now those jumping in without tickets must have short memories about overfilling stands. I bet some of these we singing justice for the 96 (97) in Paris earlier that day.

Football supporters Europe, a nonprofit and nonpartisan group who were actually there tweeted that Liverpool fans were in no way to blame for what they called a fiasco. Journalists, policemen and MPs who were first hand eye witnesses of what happened spoke of an unbelievable shambles.
A fan who received s ticket from Andy Robertson was refused entry as his ticket was a "fake".
Seems like the French authorities are looking to scapegoat fans for their own incompetence to me. Sound familiar?

Scandalous scenes of Liverpool fans' behaviour from last night's Champions League Final on social media. If you haven't got a ticket, don't jump the fences. They more than most know what atrocities that can lead to.

How on earth they can continue to play the victim is beyond me. It's also frustrating how the media pander to them and refuse to call them out for it. Must be the fault of the locals, the police, UEFA...
What a disgusting, uninformed, presumptuous and condescending pile of nonsense.

In my experience of the twisters and fiddlers it's not sufficient to have cheated the system they need others, particularly genuine people, to know they've cheated the system. Once this was limited to close associates now with social media it's the world.
The authorities have questions to answer but some of the ire of genuine fans needs to be directed at the those who have tried to cheat the system.

Clearly it was chaos from organisational perspective and many decent innocent fans were caught up in it. That being said Liverpool as a club must have known about fake tickets and the potential of fans trying to gatecrash. Liverpool could have issued a statement prior to the game saying not to travel to the ground without a ticket please do not endanger the lives of fellow supporters.

Agree, but the fans wouldn't have listened. The French authorities and UEFA should have expected this - European finals, ridiculous ticket allocation, fans travel en-masse hoping to get a ticket or just soak up the atmosphere. There certainly seems to have been no arrangements in place to check tickets prior to the fans getting right to the ground/turnstiles - it was just a farce, with, once again, innocent fans caught up right in the middle.
