Local Area. Excersise restrictions

What is meant by 'local area'. The government website says we can excersise once per day but only in our local area. I can't seem to find any guidance on this. Just wondering as I like to get on my bike for a couple of hours. Don't fancy riding round in circles!

Just use common sense and parental instinct.

I live in Saltburn and took my mountain bike to Pinchinthorpe yesterday. I reckon that's the local area. Wouldn't go further than that though.

It's typical of this government that it won't give guidance or even explain why it should be local. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned 'local' exercise means you go out of your front door, then walk, cycle or run, then go back inside.

I reckon if you plan a loop and stick to it you'll be fine. I'd say local area would be considered anywhere you can cycle to and back. I think exercise in local area means do not drive elsewhere to go for exercise, for example, me driving 50 miles into the Essex countryside for a walk.

I do intend however to cycle down to the Thames and back again via woodland trails etc and the Thames path in a 25mile loop this weekend. I'd still consider that exercising locally.

Although in lockdown 1 they categorically said driving to a location, exercising, and coming home was allowed.

Was it? I saw people being turned away from beauty spots on the news with them saying specifically that people should not drive to these places for walks etc?

They didn't at first. Then they said it was allowed because people were doing it any way. They don't learn do they?
Yes that's exactly what it was. They didn't set any clear rules, so let the public use common sense, and then said it was ok because the people who were doing it weren't all working class.

This is the actual guidance:

  • outdoor exercise. This should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)

Pretty sure it was you can drive but only if the drive was less than the intended exercise length
