John Lundstram in potential Rangers transfer exit as Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder eyes reunion

The former Sheffield United midfielder has featured only sparingly under new Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Middlesbrough are eyeing out-of-favour Rangers star John Lundstram.

Riverside manager Chris Wilder is hunting midfield reinforcements during this transfer window and is closely monitoring the current situation of the Ibrox man.

Wilder and Lundstram enjoyed great success through four years together at Sheffield United after he signed him from Oxford United.

However, the relationship ended with the boss leaving the Blades and the player refusing a new deal at Bramall Lane before subsequently switching to Glasgow last summer.

Record Sport understands the boss would be keen to work again with his old charge having taken charge on Teesside and is keeping an eye on his Ibrox developments.

Lundstram was signed by Steven Gerrard, but has featured sparingly for new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst since his arrival.

The Scouser has started just two of the Dutchman’s nine matches in charge and could be pushed further down the pecking order after the arrival of American James Sands from New York City.

Scotland international Ryan Jack will also come back from injury to add to the engine-room options for Van Bronckhorst.

Van Bronckhorst may wish to keep him and, if not, the former England youth international is also just six months into the three-year contract which was agreed upon arrival meaning Ibrox chiefs would be able to demand a decent fee from any potential suitor.

But, if he’s on the market, Wilder would be interested and he is also understood to be amongst the managers in the race for Ibrox defender Jack Simpson as several clubs south of the border eye a loan deal for the defender.

Rangers, of course, will call the shots on any potential interest in Lundstram this month.

Chris Wilder obviously managed John Lundstram who I think was Shef Utds top performer in the Premier League. Would be a mega signing if it came off imo. Jack Simpson has been on our radar for quite a while now.. we tried to get him from Bournmouth. If Rangers are looking to offload it makes sense that they would come to us.

I remember Lundstram was a bit of a 'contract rebel' at Sheff Utd.
Wouldn't re-sign and Sheff Utd fans really disappointed with his form in his last season when they got relegated.
Hope not expensive.......must be on decent wages.......Rangers got him for free hope we do.

I remember him as a very useful cheap option on Fantasy Premier League in the Blades first season chipping in with useful goals from midfield. In his second season he did very little and wonder if Lord Lundstram as he was affectionally known is a one season wonder.

5 goals in 34 then
0 goals in 28

and he has done nothing at Rangers so far - you know that "Mickey Mouse" league

Hope we stay clear of Lundstram

Is it just a coincidence that we're linked with two players from a club where the captain is Tav's big brother?

Morning.
I note we have had a stream of stories and speculation from Scotland since Chris arrived. Its a positive strategy if we get players with calber. (y)

Our last major foray into Scotland didn't turn out too good....
Yeah I have to say ....since slaven.....who was the holy grail of Scottish talent finding we have sourced fairly regular cross border raiding exercises with little to no success...I have to trust wilder though...I think I have a deep man love for him...so I'm going to trust him....😄
UTFB....one game at a time...starting with reading.....punish them....mercilessly...

Barry Robson was class! Willo Flood was a canny player too, unfortunately suffered a horrific injury. Lunstram is well known to wilder from his time playing in England and boro have been after Jack Simpson for ages before his move to Celtic.

Weird Barry Robson recollection.
Didn't he punch someone at a corner and they got a penalty?
Not sure if he was sent off too.
(at the Riverside)
