Any tips 4 of us are doing it tomorrow dropping a car in robin hoods bay today and driving to osmotherley for a 4am start.
Anyone had any experience ? Any last minute tips ? I’m thinking 42 miles of hell 😂

Vaseline yer nips & butt crack...
double socks (if you've not already hardened up your feet) to lessen blisters..
camel back for water..
sunblock & hat
fruit bars..

I did mine about 11 years ago, was very good - only got sketchy about fylingdales as it's very flat & not many good tracks to follow.. so map / GPS is a top idea too.

Starting from the direction you are is best idea also - if you plan to go up & over the Cleveland Hills at the start..

First and foremost don't do it, it's brutal 🤣

But assuming you'll ignore the bitter experience of someone you've never met on a football message board, then I'd say;

- Head lamps for the dark bits at the start, it's easy to get slightly lost and it can result in some extra effort.
- plenty of energy bars/gels and calories to keep you going
- stay hydrated
- spare socks, you may feel better changing (or wear two pairs if you have room in your boots)

Good luck!

Start training months in advance 😂

We started at ten pm, someone met us about halfway and we completely changed all clothes and had a good breakfast, set us up for the second half. At this point I applied blister plasters to a couple of developing sore point and they worked. Really enjoyed it and at the end we all agreed we could go further.

Have a great walk.

You've go to do it once. I did it in 11 hours when I was young, fit and slightly mad - I think we ran half of it. if you have a support vehicle, make sure they don't get distracted by a female hitchhiker. We waited an hour for ours to turn up at Fylingdales.

Download loads of music and podcasts for the miles and miles of boring terrain.
Some spectacular stuff too.

It is brutal and unforgiving. I have done it twice, though not for over 30 years. It really pushes you mentally and physically. A group of us set off at midnight and walked overnight - Osmotherly to Ravenscar route. I could barely walk for days afterwards. Only three of us completed it the first time, two the second.

We got lost near Fylingdales and it started to rain. I thought to myself wtf am I doing here and I swear I started to hallucinate. I thought I could see an ice cream van in the distance on the moor! When you stop its then hard to get back up and walk as your legs cease up.

Wonderful feeling of achievement on completing it but you have to really be prepared for the slog. Good luck.

You probably won't see this now but the badly eroded stretch by the Loose Howe trig point at half way has been worked on by the National Park. They've created a number of dams which have filled with water to create a series of ponds. As such there is no path so if you're unfamiliar with the route it might be a bit confusing. Just follow the line of ponds until the path reappears at the Causeway Stone and North Gill Head bog. Enjoy!😉

I did it in terrible weather where all the paths flooded. Would love to do it in tomorrow's weather but might have it's own pitfalls.

Just make sure you've got the essentials as said. Water, sun cream, paracetamol and brufen, change of socks and I had to wear trainers for the last few miles.

I've had 3 go's at this in 35 years
1st time as a young man in trainers positively skipped.along the track arriving in good time for a few beers and back to work the next day ..hardly a hair out of place 😊

2nd time 20 years later ....got to 35 miles couldn't walk another inch had to abandon.

3rd time....sweet baby Jesus..the very fabric of my life collapsed around me

Got to 30 miles ...lost 3 toe nails ...when I sat down I could not get up couldn't unbend my legs....I was off work for about 3 days spent several weeks regretting ever walking and.in a state of total mental collapse ...🤣

I will never take part again...the ravages of aging are made apparent by this walk

But overall regular paracetamol good comrades plenty of fluids and chocolate / sweet bars for energy and enjoy * while you can * the breathtaking beauty of the North yorkshire moors

Interestingly this walk was originally done by monks carrying coffins of their departed colleagues across to whitby I believe... they were some tough sons of b******* back then 😊

I did this back in the late 70's when I was 18. It was great fun with happy memories. I've spent moments in the last 40 years wondering if I should have another go. This thread has put paid to that idea.

If you can do it, jfdi, it delivers a great memory.

Is the popular folklore - a little bit may be true: Monks may have walked part of the walk though the origin is is more modern if another story is true: ..Bill Cowley originated the concept of the walk with an open challenge in the Dalesman in August 1955 to cross the moors on foot from West to East within 24 hours.
