I might be wrong about this but at one point wasn't he behind Payero in the pecking order, I seem to remember in the Olympic squad (I think?) he was benched whilst Payero got more minutes. He also had to go back to Argentina on loan for a spell due to not settling in England initially.

I'd still like Payero to be given a go under Carrick as it could pay dividends (could spectacularly fail too), but it'll depend on the willingness of both parties to give it a go.

Mac Allister started all 3 games for Argentina at the Olympics.

Payero came off the bench to replace him in 2 of them.

it's taken him 3-4 years to be established as a regular and yeah like you say he went back to Argentina intially
 
Triggering a buyout clause is one thing - quite legit.
The Ziege situation was underhand dealing by Liverpool, and they were subsequently disciplined for it.
