Report

COUNTY 4-0 BLUES

Large

Southend United’s four-game winning league run came to an end as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to league leaders Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Macaulay Langstaff took his tally to 32 for the season with a goal either side of the interval, while Sam Austin also grabbed a brace to ensure Notts County kept their grip on the top of the National League table.

Blues were limited on chances in front of goal and the closest they came to getting on the scoresheet came in the second half when Dan Mooney hit the woodwork from close range, but they were outclassed by County whose unbeaten run in the league now stretches to 25 games.

Blues had travelled to the table-topping Magpies in good spirits having won their last four in the league and boss Kevin Maher made three changes from the side that beat Gateshead as Louis Lomas, Wes Fonguck and Jake Hyde came in for Nathan Ralph, Callum Powell and Henry Sandat.
The visitors set up with five at the back to try and stifle County – the league’s leading scorers – and the plan seemed to be working in the opening quarter of an hour, with County having a lot of the ball but without testing Blondy Nna Noukeu early on.

But there was only so long that Southend could keep out Macaulay Langstaff as the Notts striker opened the scoring in the 18th minute. The number nine received the ball on the edge of the area from Ruben Rodrigues before curling the ball in for his 31st goal of the season.

Frustratingly that goal had come from County’s first meaningly effort on goal, but Blues had a huge penalty shout two minutes after going behind as Gus Scott-Morriss was brought down in the penalty area by Adam Chicksen. Referee Garreth Rhodes though wasn’t interested and waved play on.
Notts County continued to command the majority of the possession and would go on to double their lead midway through the first half. Sam Austin was the scorer, heading in at the far post after being picked out by a cross by John Bostock to put the home side in control.

Southend were working as hard as they could but were having to live off scraps in front of goal, and their only first half chance came when Hyde superbly brought a high ball down before trying to lob Sam Slocombe, but he was unable to find the target as Blues went into the break 2-0 down.
Things didn’t improve after the restart and the home side would extend their advantage further after capitalising on a mistake. A wayward pass from midfield was latched upon by Rodrigues who fed it to Langstaff to fire in his second of the evening from a tight angle.

The three points were all but wrapped up for County, but Southend continued to show their fighting spirit and went close to reducing the areas when Lomas picked up the ball on the edge of the area and fizzed a shot narrowly wide of Slocombe’s right-hand post.

Blues then went even closer to getting on the score sheet when Jack Bridge found space on the left to play a low ball across the face of goal. The ball in ran all the way through to substitute Dan Mooney who smacked the post from close range.

Despite the superb backing of almost 600 Southend fans who sang throughout at Meadow Lane, Blues were unable to get a goal for them to cheer, and County would round off the scoring as Chicksen’s deep cross from the left found Austin who smashed in their fourth with seven minutes remaining.
Blues though remain in the play-off positions in 6th and will now look to bounce back on Saturday as they travel to Plainmoor to take on Torquay United.

Can he be our Jamie Vardy?
"Macca" always keeps his hair immaculate - even after heading the ball.
He back-tackles and chases down the opposition - as far back as the half-way line.
Its a big step from the Conference to the top of the Championship.
He will stay at Notts, should they gain promotion, but will likely be off if not.

Notts owners, Christoffer and Alexander Reedtz, took over at Meadow Lane four years ago. The club was due to fold, after previous owner Alan Hardy had wrecked the club with poor business decisions. The two brothers paid outsdtanding wages and laid out a short and medium term plan.

They connect with the fans and have made shrewd Managerial appointments: Neil Ardley [ex-Wimbledon, now Solihul Moors] was in place at the time of take-over. He saw the club through the most torrid time in its history. He moved on and Ian Birchnall came in - changing the style of play and moving players on and bringing in those who fitted the template required to step up the quality of the squad. Birchnall took County to the play-offs and moved on to Forest Green Rovers. Luke Williams [coach at Swindon, Bristol City, Milton Keynes and Swansea] took the helm in June 22 and moved the club to the next level.

* County have gone 25 games unbeaten [in all competitions], dating back to October 2022!

They have made changes to the Management structure, making the club more professional: they haver a junior team and an academy. They thanked Forest for loaning their training fascilities and also re-established a good working relationship with their neighbours the other side of the Trent. They have built the Nottingham Paddle-Centre at the back of the KOP, as an additional income stream and have tidied up the site. The ground is owned by Nottingham City Council and is of a standard compatible with the Championship Standards. They have installed a new ground screen and brand-new floodlights.

Twice, the club have broken the National League Attendance Record, which now stands at 16,511 on 19th November 2022 - at home to Yeovil Town.

There are two teams chasing automatic promotion: Notts County and Wrexham. Wrexham have spent big by National League standards. In contrast, Notts have quietly gone about their business, recruiting players like Macaulay Langstaff, Cedwyn Scott, Adam Chicksen, Aiden Baldwin, Sam Slocombe, Ruben rodrigues and Sam Austin. They have a local favourite - Paddy Palmer, who is a potent midfielder. A number of players have had scouts from Championship clubs watching them - including Scott, Macaulay, Rodrigues and Palmer. The club has resisted offers - they have a policy of no-sell, unless its to bring in better quality players. The Reedtz brothers own a sports stats firm which provides data to businesses and leagues around the world.

Despite the noise of Wrexham, County are rebuilding from near-extinction only four years ago.
They currently sit top of the National League by 5 clear points. Wrexham have two games in hand, but the pressure is on them.
Luke Williams is a Coach in similar mould to Michael Carrick: he has a style of high-press, one-touch play and includes different mermbers of the squad - with essentially a "core" team at the centre. He focuses on County and often bats away any comments on other sides - unless they are the next Notts challengers.

Notts are on the box, home to Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday 25th at 17:20 hrs.

The Reedtz brothers - interviewed by two fans, Tom and George - who produce "Notts County Talk".
Alexander and Christoffer Reedtz bought the club from the brink of extinction.
They are level-headed owners, who have brought professionalism and improvemnets at all levels to Notts.
Its amazing they are happy to be interviewed and answer random questions from fans.
No prep.
No advance warning or script.....
Imagine if all club owners did this?

Macaulay Langstaff has been provisionally named in the latest England C squad.

The striker, who hit his 33rd goal of the season in our weekend draw at Bromley, is set to represent his country against Wales C at Altrincham's J Davidson Stadium on Tuesday 21 March.

Langstaff follows in the footsteps of Matt Palmer, Richard Brindley and Cal Roberts, who were all selected to represent us last season.
