He could be worth a 2 year deal though in the summer, just in case we come straight back down we’ll need players like him to help stabilise us if suddenly back in the championship

Might be forced into it. Either we buy him or Newcastle cancel his loan. Depends on whether what Howe was saying was a bluff and they are trying to force our hand into buying him so they get something for him and don't have to contribute to his wages for the rest of the season. Bit like Ipswich did with Edmundson.

I never said he would. But Newcastle can still try to force our hand on the issue to save money. And then the question becomes can we afford to lose him from the squad? Or would whatever costs be worth it compared to what we'd have to go out and spend to replace him.

Ipswich did exactly that to us last season. Who said Newcastle won't try it too?

Targett being on astronomical wages doesn't really make this a comparison to Edmundson. I don't really see how Newcastle could save any money. Targett isn't going to give up his 100k a week contract. Boro are currently paying a small percentage of it. We'd continue to pay him a similar amount if we signed him permanently, so Targett would just be missing out on the 80k that Newcastle are currently paying him every week. Why would he do that?

"Targett update then nothing before Fri: Still 50/50 on return from loan this month...but club would like perm. deal at end of season. As per lat message, he's happy here. Would have to be seen if he would accept wages to stay down here even if a deal worked out (promotion would help with that). Unsure how this one plays out next week, i.e..stays/goes/goes then returns in summer"

Harrison Burrows would have been a great signing - but he's out of our price range now. We need to find "the next Harrison Burrows" from lower leagues... which could be Finley Munroe.

Sean Roughan from Huddersfield and Imari Samuels from Dundee are two other good options

I agree - as good as he's been for us, he's not a top six premier league full-back.

I think they're just testing us (or other clubs) with the potential of selling him on a permanent deal.

He won’t want to be recalled. The fans give him loads of abuse. I saw some say they would rather Pope at LB. Then again this is the same fanbase who believe Bruno G is world class and they have the best midfield in Europe that’s when they are winning. Lose and everyone should be sacked.

Sounds like Newcastle said they would recall him due to injuries unless we agreed to extend the deadline to see if their injuries recover. Starting to look rather 50/50.

Howe and Newcastle are keen for him to stay with us as its Targets wish, but ultimately they have to put Newcastle first so if they can't get adequate cover for Livaramento or cover for his cover Targett will be going back there. I think the deadline was based on finding out this news, now it's worst case they've extended it to try and get someone else in.
