Oyez, oyez, oyez! The call of a Town Crier can be heard throughout the land and Middlesbrough is looking for its very own voice.
A competition is set to launch this week to find a new Town Crier for Middlesbrough.
Making their debut at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the Crier will declare a royal proclamation and play an important role in the weekend celebrations and beyond.
The Town Crier will also participate in future civic events, such as Armed Forces Day, and other large-scale Middlesbrough-based events such as the Mela in Albert Park, Pop-Up Pride in the town centre and Christmas festivities.
To be in with a chance of becoming the Middlesbrough Town Crier, people need to submit a video of themselves performing the following Town Crier speech:
Oyez (pronounced oh-yay), oyez, oyez
Today in Middlesbrough and throughout the Tees Valley
Let it be known in proclaiming this message
That I would like to be considered for the position of Middlesbrough town crier
God save the Queen!
Creativity is strongly encouraged and entries are not limited to speech. People are welcome to sing, rap, dance or act their way through the town cry.
The closing date for all entries is midnight on Monday, May 9.
Video entries can be submitted via email to: Jubilee@middlesbrough.gov.uk.
Applicants need to be age 18 or over and be a resident of the Tees Valley region.
The Town Crier role will be unpaid – expenses will be paid.
It is anticipated that the Town Crier post will be held for at least one year.
Full terms and conditions of the competition can be seen at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/towncrier
