Middlesbrough's lost pubs

Mentioning a police role in local pubs reminds me that my local The North Riding Hotel in Gurney Street always had several bobbies just across the street to deal with 10pm closing time, especially at weekends.

In the men only bar , fights were a regularity , and picking up one’s pint and standing on the seating to avoid the ‘”activities “ was a necessity.

The lounge allowed the sexes to mix and having a couple of pints in the bar , the menfolk could venture next door to fancy their chances with the ladies. Not surprisingly, the lounge was known locally as “the fitting shop”.

I worked in the Masham in the late 70s/early 80s and fights were a regular feature then. In fact the landlord loved nowt better than a proper brawl. He used to take likely lads out into the back yard and deal with them one on one. I never saw him come off worse.

when it was the old times drinking hours when the pubs used to close at 3 at not open again till 7.we would go over the border to the glass barrel and gosford at 5.30 as they would be open before going into town at 7
The pubs in town opened at 5.30 too. That was the standard opening time.
