misers

It's probably just a habit. Difficult to break especially as you get older. I find it hard to change financial habits and I'm a lot younger than he is. He probably doesn't like wasting money or spending it for spending sake. I'm sure your Mrs will appreciate his frugality if she ultimately benefits from it.

do you know any?

My father in law is 90 and must have well over a million in the bank (and keeps investing in long term bonds). He has never given as much as an ice cream to his grandkids and keeps a spreadsheet of what's in the fridge and freezer. He doesn't pay household bills and also hordes junk. My Mrs says he's just old.
Mention of in-laws reminds me of the Les Dawson clip I saw yesterday.

"If I'm looking a bit down in the mouth it's because I've had some bad news. It's the mother-in laws funeral tomorrow..................and she's cancelled it." 😊

I know someone who I wouldn't be surprised if he's picking up over £200k a year. His wife, who gave up work to bring up the kids etc etc gets given "pocket money" and does cleaning work so she has money to spend. I suppose that's not really reflective of a "miser" though, he's probably worryingly controlling.

That's sad to read wilko, as you say, that seems to run deeper than being a miser.
