Sorry, I didn't word that correctly. Anybody assaulting a referee shouldn't be in the game.

Anybody but the captain questioning the referee during the game should be shown a card. Managers should be disciplined similarly during the game

Fans aren't part of the game, they pay to watch and can have their say.

We’ve been over this.. a good idea that wasn’t fully implemented.

Fans are very much part of the game.. especially when it comes to referees! Fans deserve value for money and a fair competition.
 
Newy you are on the wrong side of this. Its not too do with twitter and frothing journalists. It's about the referee being able to do his job without a player assaulting him.

Why would the ban be the same as violent conduct towards a player? That doesn't make any sense, none at all.

Whether the referee was professional in having the card in his hand isn't even relevant. He should be free to do his job.

Not sure what would be a fair ban but I would be starting at 10 games not 3 or 4.

Let's look at the repercussions of a 3 match ban. A player gets sent off for violent conduct. That's a 3 match ban. Why not start on the ref as well.

You did read an earlier post of child refs being threatened by parents, right?

There isn't a single excuse for mitrovic's behaviour, not one.

On the wrong side of popular opinion perhaps. He does touch the referee.. but assault?
Violent conduct is violent conduct, the same should apply ref or player.

You saying the referees approach is not relevant to this.. I say more so than young refs being threatened by parents. No kid is copying Mitrovic.. No kids copied Suarez biting etc etc

The improvements come from on the pitch with a profession approach and communication

Huge unnecessary bans don’t improve the standard of refereeing or the attitude towards referees. The overall lack of control leads to situations like these.

Suggesting 10 games is too many is not excusing Mitrovic’s behaviour.

the cage has been rattled, the drum has been beaten. I do not feel the need to swing from rope to rope beating my chest and throwing fecal matter around. 4 games is my opinion and I have arrived at that view without checking what the board thinks, or what journalists think or footballers. Just by watching the game and seeing how everything played out.

But it wasn’t just the contact. He then squared up to the referee forcing him backwards. If that happened in a pub you’d be sure you were going to be in trouble.

Mitrovic then needed to be held back by multiple players.

It can’t be accepted and I maintain 10 games would be lenient.

Firstly the ban is not to improve the standard of refereeing. No connection at all.

Secondly it was assault in law, common assault. I accept the field of play is assumed to be free of certain laws as it is a physical game. That privelige doesn't extend to refs.

Thirdly, popular opinion has nothing to do with this either, or goes to the heart of adjudicating anything. There is a covenant between competitors and officials. You ignore that at your peril and the peril of the game. That in a nutshell is why its not the same offence as it would be to another player.

The inference has been that a longer ban will improve the game and stop parents shouting at young refs at the grassroots level. Assault? He’s not going to be arrested and charged is he. He over stepped the line and was red carded as a result. If a player pulls another players arm and shouts at them in a controversial moment..you wouldn’t expect them to be red carded. It’s is not the same offence.

You’re so far out on this one and continue to argue the unarguable.

Handbags? You don’t know that. Mitrovic had lost it, the referee can’t assume he’s not going to be attacked.

He might well get 6 months and it would be well deserved.

I wouldn’t be surprised.. well deserved? No one will be complaining.
 
You can't compare football and rugby refereeing. Rugby refs are protected by the rules of the game. People don't chat back and argue because they would be off the pitch.

The rules of football leave the refs in a vulnerable position. You would ban for 4 games for that behaviour.

In rugby if you did that you would be out for up to a year.

Rugby rules "In accordance with law 9.28, disrespecting the official’s authority, verbal abuse and physical contact can all lead to bans of up to 12 months while threatening words or actions can be punished by a suspension of up to five years"
 
Feels too soft to me, he should have been banned for the rest of the season for me. The ban has to hurt to be effective, He should not be paid for the ban too and the money given to charities.
