National League North

Of the bottom 7 sides I've seen 6 play in the league, three of them against the Boro. So easy to drop through the divisions.
It is but that Not really the full story as most are for off field issues mainly financial like york moving issues and Darlington were basically shafted.

Hereford was a league cup game if they are included. Same for Scarborough.

Chester and Darlo and York are very rare league opponents for the Boro.

The biggest drop in recent years is probably Grimsby Town (National League Premier). They were a top half Championship team at one stage in modern times and the area has a population of around 160,000 big enough to support crowds of 8,000 plus. They have reached the semi finals of the FAC twice.

Grimsby Town have given us some thumpings, even during my time

Ray Hankins debut v Grimsby when he got sent off & we lost 4-1 in 1982

The beauty of the pyramid and whilst not good for the clubs involved at that level who have been in the league previously the opportunity for clubs like Harrogate, Forest Green, Fleetwood and Sutton to experience playing in the Football League for me more than outweighs the misfortune of those who are relegated.

It allows a path back for clubs like Bury and Macclesfield who have gone to the wall through mismanagement and allows any club a path through success to what used to be an exclusive cartel of mediocrity and mutual lumbar itching.

12 ex league teams in National League
9 in National League North
1 in National League South

Also Workington, Macclesfield, Bury, Rushden & Diamonds land the likes lower down the pyramid.

There's been some big teams lost over the years. Mainly since the change to automatic promotion
