“I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular”

Genius!

Morrissey has turned in to a proper t*t as he's got older but I still adore The Smiths and his first few solo albums. I downloaded Johnny Marr's book recently but I haven't got around to reading it yet.

Johnny Marr created such beautiful riffs and sounds, which were the perfect compliment to Morrissey's unique and compelling lyrics. Morrissey - before he went to the bad - was a wonderfully original lyricist. His readiness to use humour was much misunderstood but was actually a great strength. They were a truly great band and Marr remains a top bloke.

I never understood why so many people thought that The Smiths were miserable and depressing. Some of Morrissey's lyrics were hilarious. I never got to see them live unfortunately. But I did see Morrissey once at The Brangwyn Hall in Swansea and that was a fantastic gig.

I think his feyness offended a lot of alpha male types for a start. Celebrating physical weakness, as he seemed to be doing, would never play well with that crowd. Don't forget this was the mid 80s, when Big Rock ruled.

One of those bands that change your life and outlook when you're young. Certainly did me.
But they were generally rubbish live the few times I saw them. Hey ho

They sound pretty good on the first three quarters or so of the 'Rank' live album before Morrissey murders the last couple of songs and that fairly early gig from the Hacienda that's on Youtube sounded pretty good too. Maybe you just had bad luck. All bands have off days.

Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs singer) did a really good version of How Soon is Now too (probably as the band Love Spit Love). Well worth a listen...
I'm sure Boro Fur will know of this cover

I only saw the Smiths 30 or so times and not once were they rubbish. Suppose I must have been lucky then, or Ebor very unlucky...

My first gig at the Town Hall in 86, Queen is Dead Tour. Marr is an a absolute genuis......Morrissey used to be quite entertaining...

It's like a question from Marx or Kierkegaard or someone of that ilk. You can imagine then sitting around in a Vienna dive drinking absinthe and trying to answer 'How soon is now'?
