New EFL TV Deal Implications

I hope the football clubs that signed up to the new 5 year tv deal with SKY have fully weighed up the implications.
Described already by one FSA rep as a "sea change" the deal means that 42% of Championship games are now going to be moved for tv. I would conclude that as massive disruption. It is absolutely imperative that notice periods are at least as log as the Premier - 6 weeks. But even this does not go far enough. We may need negotiations on our behalf with train operators and hotel chains for weekend bookings that can change with match day. We all know to our cost that public transport is now really poor and this will mean many cannot attend games home or away. I don't know if you realise that Yusuf was unable to attend the recent run of games switched from Saturday and he will not have been alone. Also, beyond this kids in the family enclosure may find a lot of games where the kick off is too late or perhaps too early and clashing with other activities (have a look over at the GRFZ for kick offs that are not Sat 3pm and you will likely see significant gaps).
The Football Supporters Association will be debating this and are looking for input on ideas/recommendations to put to the EFL and SKY. But there need to be a some major concessions because nearly half games moving for tv is really going to irritate and annoy a lot of people.

Makes me question getting season tickets for my younger kids. Travelling up from Leeds means that for an 8 o'clock KO we aren't getting home until about 23:45 which is really late for them on a school night.

Already felt like there were a lot of games moved to an 8 o'clock kick off this season so worrying if there are going to be even more next season

i think it is more the weekend games, the weekday fixtures are all 100% on for either live on the main channel or the new streaming service as it is now just about

over a weekend there will be 5 live championship games every weekend, so only 7 kicking off saturday 3pm. So slots will probably be from
Friday 8pm,
saturday 12,30pm, 5.50pm and 7.45pm
sunday 12pm - can't see them putting on a 7.30 after super sunday
monday 8pm - not every week as they have premier league unless they are going to overlap

I wonder if they might overlap - although we know Monday night has notoriously poor numbers for Premier.

Don’t be annoyed with me for this but I really wish TV companies would just f*ck right off.

What’s wrong with showing a game or two on a Sunday and a couple in midweek. Boro v Rotherham on a Saturday night FFS. A 12pm kick off on Sunday for one of the biggest games both these clubs have had in years. Playing an FA Cup match down at Brentford at 5pm on a Saturday. Just f*ck off.

I know there are posters, and Capy is one I’ve read say this a lot, but these games are just moved on a whim and it means people who’ve ALREADY BOUGHT TICKETS ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND. It is mental how this just goes on and on and on and instead of it getting better, it gets worse. They move more games.

If you follow Jon Nicholson on Twitter, Boro fan and author, he has access to the viewing figures for subscription football and barely anyone is watching it.

In one sense you cannot blame the tv companies for wanting as much as possible for their money. Then in another you cannot blame the clubs as they are desperate for another revenue stream and not just fans through the turnstiles.

My opinion may very well be an unpopular one but I generally welcome more games on the telly.

Beats all the other crap shown on the 762 channels of $hite! And lets be honest, for an overwhelming majority, the games could be played at 3am on a Thursday morning and we would still attend (if work/family commitments allowed)

You can blame both of those things. It’s driven by greed. This much football does not need to be moved for television.

Perhaps if the clubs organised themselves over how much they're shelling out on players, agents, enormous coaching teams etc. they wouldn't need so much revenue.

same with the Friday nights. they have X amount of prem games to show then.

i would imagine 12.30 saturday is a cert and probably same on sunday. the monday and friday 8pm will alternative and there will be a 5.30 and/or 7.45 saturday alternating with the premier league

the sticky situation is when the premier rights come up and they put a shedload more games on covering all of those times anyway.

They did say that all games up to Xmas or something that are going to be on TV will be announced at fixture release time. So that at least is a good thing. Will make life a lot easier.

Apart from obviously showing all the Leeds games plus, showing the teams who will be toward the top of the League, they‘ll often look at moving the long distance games where fans struggle to then use public transport to get back home in a day so decide to stay at home and so boost viewing figures, so I’d imagine Sunderland will be shown a lot too as will Southampton. Thankfully, we’ll be unaffected by this deal 😉

It could depend on how the deal is structured - I presume they have to show every club - do they have to show every club home and away?

This deal does not start till 2024/25 season - next season is the same as this season I believe
yeah this is correct.

the new coverage will include all of the following live 100%: opening day, closing day, all weekdays, all bank holidays and boxing day, EFL cup 100% coverage of every game, EFL trophy games too 100%. plus all playoffs as usual.

the ifollow and red button services will be closed and replaced by a Sky streaming service. there will also be minimum number cameras at each game so it is not just 1 camera per match. think it is 4 for the championship and league 1 and 2 for league 2.
