Scrape into the playoffs on some seasons with that total

78 points will get the playoffs. Only 1 team in 20 years has got 78 points and not made it.
The next highest total to miss out was 75, but usually 70-72 is normal for the team in 7th.
4 teams with 70 points or less have made it to the playoffs in that time.

As a rule of thumb, the totals needed for the playoffs tend to be higher when the eventualy champions don't gets relatively few points (e.g. Bournemouth in 2015; Fulham last year).
When a team runs away with it, they've usually beaten the 5th-8th teams a couple of times, which can make the number of points needed for the playoffs 3 or 4 points lower than normal.

Burnley are running away with it.

I think we will make the play offs, hoping still to make 3rd or 4th for second leg at home advantage.

We have no chance of top two. We are too far behind and sadly are just not good enough to make the gap back.
Making the play offs after the poor start will be a great recovery, but we are still a long way off being a good side IMHO.
Agree, but my main issue is when we have played the better sides in this division under Carrick (Burnley and Sunderland) they have exposed our weak points and we have been unable to impose our strengths. I fear this what would happen if we were to make the play-offs. A bit like when we got there under Pulis.

With another centre back - lad from Brighton, a good midfielder, bloke from Rotherham and a pacy quality right winger - from anywhere, we could be top four. Another right back would be handy as would a forward but a centre back, midfielder and winger would be enough.

yup CB-CM-RW and we're good to go. Anymore than that will purely be disruptive in my opinion.

7 Massimo Luongo - Dan Barlaser - Grant Leadbitter
10 Rodrigo Muniz - Cameron Archer - Patrick Bamford
11 Ste Walker - Morgan Rogers - Lee Tomlin
12 Grant Hall - Rav Van Den Burg - Daniel Ayala

I'd still like to see Forss on the right with a better striker in the middle. I dont think its done him any favours playing with Crooks as the front man. Akpom neither, whos goals have dried up without a mobile striker in front of him. Crooks puts the effort in but he isn't a striker. Needs to start Archer next game.

The option to go 4-3-3 would be interesting.. although we don’t believe in shapes ect
