New Year challenge

Just looking at Erimus’s NYD thread and it’s interesting that David Mills, whose debut was in 1969, played in the same team as Tony Mowbray, who played until 2000. So that’s 31 years covered by two players. The challenge is to connect pre-war to the present day using as few Middlesbrough players as possible, the only condition being that they have to have played together in at least one match. So you might start with Wilf Mannion who played pre- and post-war with Boro for example. The players don’t have to have played together at Middlesbrough, but must have played in the same team, in a competitive match, and must have played at Middlesbrough at some stage in their career. Over to you.

Goalkeeper Tim 'Tiny' Williamson spent 23 years in goal for the Boro so that'll cover a big chunk of the years

I've done it in 9.

Mannion > Bill Harris > Spraggon > McAndrew > Pallister > Schwarzer > de Laet > Ayala > any current player who played with Ayala

The crucial link is Ritchie de Laet who played for Lecester in Schwarzer's debut for them. I'm sure there's better. Colin Cooper might be a useful link.

Wow, after Harris I was struggling with 3 players mentioned up to 76, whereas I could only get 4, well done

Frank Spraggon was our 1st ever FAC sub, when he played away at Chester 26th November 1966

Right, I've trimmed it a bit and Schwarzer isn't involved, or Pallister for that matter.

As you were up to McAndrew. Then Cooper > Ehiogu > Howson

Howson's debut at Leeds was a game where Ugo Ehiogu played on loan in 2006. So that's 7 players, pre-war to now.

I had Mannion, Ugilini, Peacock, Jones, Armstrong then struggled

You can actually do it with players who only played together at Middlesbrough:

Mannion > Bill Harris > Spraggon > McAndrew > Cooper > Downing > Howson (or any other current player who played with Stewart Downing at Boro)
