No rainbow armbands to be worn

Yep if FIFA can give tacit endorsement to being anti-LGBT and our FA go along with it, then how on earth can they expect anyone to take them seriously on their campaigns against racism and sexism in the game?

Does it just need a rich enough country or person to say we don't like that and it stops?

F1 has the same issue in Hungary and Saudi and does nothing towards any meaningful action, it is left to Vettel and Hamilton to speak out.

I really a hope a player being interviewed after a game comes out live on air and calls out the utter disgrace that Qatar hosting the world cup is, and how happy he'll be to get back to the hotel so his partner can suck him off.

Suppose that it just confirms what most of us suspected: that these campaigns were just about branding or being seen to do the right thing. As opposed to being designed to support any genuine change.

If they're being honest they should probably add small print to anything they do from now on. Eg

"Football against racism"*

*As long as no rich racists are too offended by that of course.

A joint statement from seven football associations said they could not put their players "in a position where they could face sporting sanctions".

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented," the statement read.

The governing bodies - England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland - said they had written to Fifa in September informing them about the OneLove armband but not received a response.

"Fifa has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play," the statement added.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband.

"However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play."

In response, Fifa has brought forward its own "No Discrimination" campaign, which had been due to start from the quarter-finals.

Captains will now be permitted to wear a No Discrimination armband for the duration of the
tournament.

I assume this is a pl55 take? Or is it no discrimination against Qatar's right to execute gays?

Instead of issuing a statement, the seven FAs should have doubled down on this and forced FIFA’s hand.

Take the bookings for their captains and, if they get booked again for refusing to remove the armband, take the sending off and then pass the armband to another player. Rinse and repeat.

Would FIFA really want their highest profile matches to be abandoned in front of TV audiences of millions simply because they don’t want to upset the Qataris?

If you say that you have values then you have to be prepared to defend those values. You can’t just do it because it looks like the right thing to do, or give up when it might be a bit tough.

Just so odd to sit here freezing my nuts off as heating is off waiting for England to play a World Cup Finals game.

It's very weak by the FA but TBH it's more of a story now FIFA banned it and the FA have toed the line.

But football is full of hypocrisy, I am not surprised in the slightest. I thought Kane might wear it anyway.

I imagine there will be lots of boos when we take the knee.
