North East Bylines: rail travel in Teesside

I remember the initial modest budget for Middlesbrough station improvements & walk past regularly & look at £34m & wonder what could cost £34m take a decade, it seems, to build &, the few times I've been in the station, remain so hidden from view..... what has the money gone on?? the London link??

It is a shame the leaders back in the day saw fit to remove the trams from the town & region - I can forgive them their short-sightedness - however that & light rail as proposed in the link info would certainly benefit the region..

Had no idea the plans for a 3rd platform at Middlesbrough have been dropped.

I have the initial drawings from Network Rail for the new platform and track layout, and last I heard, they were waiting on funding approval/buisness case sign-off from the TVCA.

Not sure extra platforms are needed at some of the stations mentioned. Redcar, Saltburn, James Cook for example. But it is good to see someone with ideas and not just bullsh!t like Houchen.

I won't pretend to know anything relating to how much this kind of thing costs so could be wide of the mark - but the fact part of the area was structually failing and in danger of falling in - it was probably a costly addition?

The proposal to establish a park and ride at Pinchthorpe is a good one.
The issue has to be faced, that the line into Middlesbrough from Nunthorpe has to be doubled. That includes the section over the level crossing parallel to the A66.
The train - sets to be reliable and effective would have to consist of at least 4, if not 6 carriage sets.. Its no good expecting a park and ride to work with a 20 or 30 minute service on a single line capacity. It has to have platforms long enough to accommodate 6 bogies and signalling which enables a fast efficient reliable service. Middlesbrough will need more than a siding to accommodate train-sets.

maybe, ...decades of underfunding in the area... [ TBH most of the UK with the exception for London & SE ]

'failed' proposal for London 'garden' bridge cost £53m... nice one Joanna..

There's only one person responsible for spaffing that money away and it's Boris Johnson.
