The result of the North Ormesby ward by-election held on Thursday, December 16 in Middlesbrough has been announced.

Labour candidate Nicky Gascoigne was elected to Middlesbrough Council with 172 votes.

The full results were:

Nicky Gascoigne (Labour) 172 - 74.4% (Elected)

Mark Horkan (Independent) 32 - 13.9%

Val Beadnall (Conservative) 20 - 8.7%

Ian Jones (Liberal Democrats) 7 - 3%

One ballot paper was rejected. The 231 votes cast represented a 13.3% turnout from an electorate of 1,750.

This was a by-election after the Independent councillor resigned - following being revealed as building a chateaux in France.

Actually this could be significant, possibly - first ward that has voted in a Labour and not Independent since the council elections.

Two questions:

* Do local elections require candidates to put down a deposit?

* Is it illegal for people from North Ormesby to build chateaux in France?

it isnt illegal to build a chateaux in france, but he spent more time in france than representing his ward.
i dont think many people in north ormesby new there was an election on and who was up.
there was no campaigning from what i could see.then yesterday i had to google who was running

I think the issue was he sent explosives there hidden in a cake.

Sending a gateau to the château just causes all sorts of trouble.

13% turnout - has interest in politics ever been so low. We should all worry at the disinterest and distain felt by the electorate at the moment. People seem completely disenfranchised from those that govern - all very sad

There was a lot of campaigning - I only know this because I attended an event at Base Camp for Sean Durkin where a lot of the room had been out campaigning that day. A couple of weeks ago. But surely with COVID and Christmas there are big distractions around.
