Now that Newcastle are in the Champions League

I think we will see a slightly higher class of footballer being attracted to the Saudi millions next season and Newcastle to kick on even further. A lot of top players want to and expect to play in the Champions League and they may look at Newcastle as a team that can offer this to them on a regular basis (or the Saudi money can). This is something that Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea can't offer. Liverpool will always be able to attract top players but I feel it will give Newcastle the edge over the other two teams.

I don't expect the Mags to set the CL alight and think that is another learning curve but could honestly see them challenging for domestic trophies and a successful team will attract further players.

Next season will be telling with them playing in Europe and competing on the domestic front but I do feel the money they have will allow them to handle that better than Spurs did.

Sunderland's present squad could still beat them though. 🤣 🤣 🤣

They're definitely 2/3 years ahead of their target. No chance they would have predicted they'd be in this position after fighting off relegation only last season. The lack of midweek games due to no Europe has clearly helped them...something they'll quickly need to learn to handle if they want to play with the 'big boys' every season.

They've spent an enormous amount of money, but the players they currently have are still playing above their levels. Pope, Burn, Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron - these 5 are all nowhere near CL quality. And all these first teamers will need to be upgraded if they wish to kick on.

Plus their captain, Trippier is approaching 33.

However, Bruno G, Botman, Schar (31 years old mind), Joelinton, Isak all look very good players in which they can build a team around that spine.

No doubt they'll blast more money this summer to strengthen and bulk the squad ready for a long hard season.

My prediction is they will find it tough trying to balance it and won't have such a successful league campaign. Chelsea with Poch and no Europe could well turn back into a force. Liverpool will also improve. And no doubt Man Utd will spend big again. City will always be there or thereabouts and then Arsenal's young squad should only improve with this season's experience. And I've not even mentioned Spurs or Brighton...or maybe even Villa under Emery?

its like acid in my mouth, but you have to say Eddie Howe has done a top job this season without going all Fantasy Football manager with the spending.

We are in for a painful noisy few seasons, which will be all worth it when they undoubtedly self destruct in a couple of seasons time when they haven't won back to back premier league titles and champions league titles and they bring in a big name to mange the ultimate decline back to where they belong.

Are they actually in the champions league or the 3rd qualifying round?

EDIT Isnt it usually the 4th place team that has to qualify?

They are clearly going to be signing a number of new players. I wonder if we'll be in for any their soon to be squad players this summer?

I don't know about that really.

Liverpool have been in the CL 14 times in last 20 seasons (excluding this one) and have won it twice.

Chelsea 18 out of last 20.

That is pretty regular for both.

They've spent a fortune since the Saudis took over, and that's with the limitations placed on them by their current sponsorship and lack of European football.

They'll go in to overdrive now.

Thankfully they won nothing this year, so there can be no doubt about the origin of the trophies I expect them to win going forward.

I think you need to read my post again.

I said Liverpool would always be able to attract top players no matter if they can offer CL or not.

Chelsea on the other hand have gone back over and they have a lot of work to do to get back in the top four. The club is a mess at the moment with poor managerial appointments and due to that, I feel Newcastle has the edge over Chelsea in attracting players to the club.

It can only be good for domestic football that we have Man City, Man Utd, Newcastle, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs competing for the top four places.

I'm going to be honest ...I'm ok with it in the same way you have to accept a thumb where the sun don't shine for a prostate exam...
Painful but you know it's for greater good.😆
They've had some lean years of terrible management with Ashley and I genuinely wish them well...
As for Sunderland...May they rot in football hell
That is all

While I agree CL will help attract players, I think we may see some regression from Newcastle next year.

First, they actually have to play in the CL; it does lead to a large demand on the squad, and it will take some toll.
Second, I will give them credit for overachieving this season, but they have set a bar for themselves. It's a nicer problem to have, but sooner or later, whatever was an achievement before becomes the norm, and fans start asking "why haven't we kicked on"?

I think retaining their CL spot next season while playing in the CL would be a good achievement.

I was replying to your statement that neither Liverpool or Chelsea can offer regular CL football. Time will tell if that is true going forward but at the moment the stats don't back that up.

Has it not just been a poor premier league with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs all well under par by their usual standards?

But fair play to the mags capitialising on this

It's taken a massive under performance from Liverpool , Chelsea and Tottenham to allow this. Last season Tottenham finished 4th on 71 points but winning 22 games. Mags have only won 19 games . so far Liv are about 22 pts off lat season and Chelsea about 122 pts. Mags have profitted for sure. Lets face it , it's only 6 guaranteed games mid week in the autumn early winter when teams are still fresh . It only depends what happens after that first round as to having an affect in the league re tiredess , knocks etc.

I can't stand Howe, but credit where it's due, he's done excellent this season. they're riding high on the crest of a wave at the minute, but I don't think it will befor the locals turn on him if they aren't in the top two or three at Christmas.

I didn’t say they couldn’t offer regular CL football, I said they couldn’t offer it this season and it would give them an advantage over Chelsea when buying players. Liverpool, like Manchester Utd, will always be able to attract players.

Their fans are anticipating a league cup/fa cup win as a minimum next season.
I would love it, just love it if they go out of both in the early rounds.
