NYC Trip - Advice Needed

Second the Tenement Museum - did it last time but would be tempted to do a different "tour" this time. We also stayed a couple of blocks away. Philly also appeals, we'll need to narrow these down at some point - ha!

Other things in NYC we didn't do last time, but will do this, include Guggenheim, Harlem (Apollo or Jazz Club) and maybe take in a baseball game.
Don't spend all your time travelling. Just pick out a few places and do them properly. I know it's tempting to try to pack in as much as you can but Philly, Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland is enough for another holiday.

So we finally settled on four nights upstate (midweek). Couple in Woodstock and a couple in Beacon. Was hoping there might be something at Levon Helm's place while we're there but seems to be weekends mainly at present. I get to tick off a long-held ambition to see Big Pink too :)

Beacon looks pretty cool as well - decent hiking and some nice breweries in the town (also easy to get back into the city via train).

Re: the lack of public transport, one of my favourite bands (The National) are playing at a Belgian brewery (!) "up the road" (in US terms) while we're there but we've got absolutely no chance of making it. One for next time

Probably a bit late, but if you're up in the Catskills then this "glamping" company are great ( https://autocamp.com/catskills/ ). We've stayed at a number of their sites on the west coast, and they've just started to move east.

They also have a location in Cape Cod, however my preference would be the Chatham Bars Inn, which is one of my favourite hotels on the East Coast ( https://www.chathambarsinn.com/ )

Ommegang is definitely worth a visit - be aware that it's a hike outside Cooperstown, although you can camp on the brewery site. We have, in the past, stayed in Cooperstown itself and booked a taxi to get to and from the brewery.
If you're using Metro North, Peekskill Brewery is almost right outside the station in Peekskill.

Thanks, I think the lack of our transport rules Ommegang out unfortunately.

Good tip on Peekskill - I'll look out for it.

Must admit I fell in love with the place the first time. Can't think of anywhere on earth I'd rather live. The diversity of neighbourhoods, people, food, cultures etc - just incredible. I'm looking forward to seeing some more of the state as well.

Next time I'll be over there will likely be World Cup 2026 but fancy doing the West Coast and potentially South that time.

NYC is incredible - we've been there a few times, the first time we got engaged. The next morning we're sitting in Applebee's having a big American breakfast chatting over what time we could call family to give them the good news etc. I asked for the bill and it seemed to take a while. In the time we were waiting a big American guy in shades who was sitting in the booth opposite ours got up and left, giving us a massive grin as he did.

Not long after he'd gone the waitress came back to say there was nothing to pay, a "generous benefactor" had paid it for us - it was such an incredible gesture from a complete stranger and something you'd think only happens in movies!

We did NYC to Washington DC by train , down through Savannah and Charleston in a car. The nicest trip we could have done. The people are just a joy. Go for it.

I've just realised that we arrive at JFK on September 11th.

What will the city be like on this day?
Not as busy as last year, when it was the 10 year anniversary.

It won't make a difference to you landing on the 11th, as you'll be knackered, and not likely to be out visiting the Twin Towers memorial etc, first day.

Some of the restaurants, bars and nightlife (on the 11th) might be a bit sombre of course, as to be expected.

We went to see the NY Knicks play of all teams the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden. We had the cheapest tickets, around 15 dollars and still had a great view.
