Our negativity at start of games, and throw ins, which are awful all game are giving momentum to opposition

Constantly playing the ball back to Bettinelli by back four at start of games is handing momentum to the opposition.
Dont mind them using Bettinelli if it is then passed back out of defence but much more now we are just launching it anywhere.
Also I reckon we must have on average 40 throw ins per game, nearly always we throw a 50/50 balls down the line, losing possesion constantly.
This is giving possesion away far to easily, we desparately need to work on retaining possesion at re-starts.
I.M.O.

I thought that was the major fault in getting us on the back foot today.

Throw-ins are a pathetic tactic as well. I presume the idea is that the opposition win them and the ball drops to our feet. The triangle with two splitting players is even worse as we don't attempt to get the ball out of trouble.

It seems to be the Warnock way though and is unlikely to change.

Liverpool have a throw in coach. I watched one of their games over Christmas. It was notable that they would take their throw ins very quickly and often be able to throw to an unmarked man. They also took several long throws backwards if they saw a player that was unmarked.
I think this is a far better tactic than waiting to get your fullback on the throw in, and taking the time to set up. Liverpool were able to get the ball uncontested even 20 yards from the opponent's goal line on occasions.
Just googled it and there an article and vid on them

As for the passes back to goal, it is a very definite tactic. Bettinelli is good with his feet and I note the commentator last week said archer is another. It seems pep and Warnock have that in common. What the keeper does with the ball varies from game to game. Often he will hit it long, but against Brentford last week he played it short. I think giving the ball away in your own half in a Warnock team is a cardinal sin, and we will use the goalkeeper far more than usual. Last time I looked Bettinelli had played the third most passes in the team. It has been successful for us on the most part, though there are times I wish paddy would step out with the ball more, as he's very comfortable doing so, and needs to get into positions to cross more often.

Send this to Neil!

It seemed that the ball was out of play more than it was in today.

Passbacks to Bettinelli excepted, while in-play it was mostly in the air and not on the ground!

The persistent use of the king ball tactic was baffling me. It wasnt working. Akpom against Harlee Dean was a no contest and George Friend bullied Tav all game.

Don't think we won one ball from the hoofs either first or second half. Later in second half they hit a few towards Spence but he didn't win anything either.

Yes the constant passing back to Bettenelli just allows the opposition to bet back into shape. You need to get it forward quicker at times when their positions are stretched

Yes they must be part of our defensive strategy as they certainly are not contributing to our offence.

Yep, bloody infuriating. The first half we just chucked it up front, either by Paddy or Betinelli.
So fking frustrating. Apart from 5 mins in the second half we didn't play footy at all, yet we had better players. Just played in to the hands of a poor Karanka team. So annoying.

Grrrr :)

The trouble was we normally play out from the back. Paddy comes out from the back and our full backs are in their half. Today they pressed us, especially in the first half and we ended up just blasting the ball forward. When Howson came on we had more control but unfortunately Akpom had been taken off and Britt was on! Howson and Akpom must play in the same team.

Do we really normally play out from the back. Usually it shuffles between Fry and McNair and then it either goes back to Bettenelli who launches it or McNair launches it. Fry seems incapable of playing the ball forwards sometimes. We very rarely play out from the back. Even the fullbacks are guilty of launching up the wing and often into touch. Its a bit better when Howson plays but obviously he has been missing.
We need to be cleverer than that as we have been sussed out.

We usually try and get Djiksteel and Bola taking the ball forward if possible. Yesterday neither were looking for the ball so it seemed to be a tactical decision.

As the game progressed, Morsy and then Howson seemed to be the players to take the ball forward from a more central position, although Birmingham weren't pressing us so much later on.

Yep, totally played into their hands today, never won a header at all up front.

The most annoying thing is, Tharp had George Friend at LB, not once did we attack him and we all know George’s legs went years ago

I struggled to understand the constant launching the ball forward yesterday. We don't have a CF on the books who can head the ball or hold it up (that includes Fletcher).

The majority of balls just sailed over the top or were comfortably headed clear by the Brum CBs. Just seemed really odd to stick with that 'method'.

The throw ins have been poor. Then again setplays in general are a massive issue. We simply don't evey look like scoring from them.

Thought it was funny when Gabbidon said how good we are from set pieces. Very ill informed
