Our Successful Managers

I looked back since the days of Big Jack
In summary we have had around 20 managers who have had a meaningful time at the club
Split is 50/50 between novices and experienced managers

Big Jack, Rioch, Robbo, Smac and AK all go in the 'success' bucket from the novices
John Neil, Lennie and possibly Venables from the 'experienced' pack

Just a bit of fun and, clearly times have changed, but just worth thinking about when exprienced managers are being touted about

It's all about context and the quality of experience. I'd argue that Smac working as assistant at Man Utd to Fergie was better experience than some of the other managers we've had. AK also working in the spanish youth set ups probably knew a lot more about the technical aspects of the game than others.
Robbo was inexperienced but a big name and had unprecidented amounts of money thrown at him

Depends on definition of success.

I'd say Mogga coming back and working on a shoe string yet turning the club around on and off the pitch was very successful. Probably stayed a bit too long but that happens to all managers.
I would of liked to of seen what Mowbray could of done with money, as he has always appeared to have a cute eye for a player and he did bring in Adomah,Leadbitter,Friend Ayala for less than 2m, who where all excellent players for the club.

New managers are usually given more time. You don't insist on instant success. McClaren lost his first 4 games, how much time would we have given an experienced manager with the same record. You could argue that Woodgate and Southgate were some of our worst appointments. Southgate got us relegated but we had a few years in the PL with him but to go from UEFA cup finalists to relegated in such a short amount of time was a massive failure. Pulis got playoffs and then just missed out but expectations were much higher, same with Warnock and Mowbray.

The success of the manager can only be measured alongside the expectations of the club and the amount of money being spent. That's why some like Strachan and Monk were so poor because they had money to spend.

Mogga also spent a fair bit on Juke though who wasn't really a success and in trying to shoehorn him into the side he blew our promotion hopes.

All managers fail in the end, unless they retire before they are sacked. This is why I want Leo to stay on but not as manager.

That’s how I felt when Mogga was appointed. It was bound to end in tears and I really didn’t want that to happen to him.
