Peloton exercise bike

So not "glib" advice then? I said paying a few grand for an exercise bike and paying a subscription is mental imo. You are suggesting a way around having to pay that. So you're agreeing you fool. All I'm suggesting is unless it is something you really enjoy, it is totally unnecessary. I've never been to a gym in my life or paid for any fitness classes, yet am fitter and stronger than 99% of people who do.

I’m not agreeing. If someone has the cash to pay for a peloton and wants to do so that’s their call, I’ve zero problem with and buying a outdoor bike is not an alternative solution because riding a bike and doing spin class / HIIT are, as covered several times in this thread, completely different things.

Just like paying over a grand for a tacx and subscribing to zwift isn’t mental, or buying an atom and subscribing to bkool. Each of these represents a high end solution to wanting to either train on a bike indoors, compete against other cyclists indoors or so spin classes on demand from home indoors.

Buying a bike doesn’t solve any of those needs because it involves using a bike outdoors in a completely different way, and it is glib because it suggests that he had somehow not considered the idea of just buying a bike and went straight to the idea of buying a luxury spin bike.

I have had a peloton for a few months now. I thought long and hard before buying it due to the cost. its absolutely excellent and the classes are really motivational. You can workout depending on your fitness level although 30 minutes of HIIT and Hills four or five times a week will have a positive impact on weight loss and fitness.
I used to be member of a local gym although the peloton is more convenient and offers a fantastic all round workout. Recommended!
I ride as buffaloboro on peleton

After much deliberation ordered the Atom next Generation - around 4 months wait tho.

The wait for exercise equipment at the moment is insane. I've been after a pair of Bowflex SelectTechs for months

A good read this. Cheers.

I do find it puzzling on here the amount of vitriol people spew over things that are 'expensive'. Whether it's cars, iPhones or seemingly spin bikes there is always a vocal "if you pay a lot for something you're some sort of sucker / narcisist / fashion victim / show off" response from people.

Why do they care how much you want to spend on something?

Bizarre.

I’m a bit of a cheapskate primarily as I will use it a couple of times a week during the winter. I have seen a few exercise bikes around the £200 mark which is about all I would want to pay. Can anyone recommend one for that price? I’ve seen a few - what’s the impact of the weight of the wheel which seems to be listed and seems to vary quite a lot?

Dunno you see it a lot on line. People either need to justify their purchases to strangers, or people who dont like products like to validate why they feel that way. Bit daft really.

The weight of the wheel is what makes it feel like a real bike. Cheaper bikes have a really light wheel which makes it really easy to cycle and hence generally less excercise. a heavier wheel will usually feel better and be a more realistic ride.

Pick one up used and your money will go a lot further.

My Wattbike Atom Next Generation arrived a couple of weeks ago.
It is just a brilliant bit of kit.

Shoddy customer service along the way and a long 20 week wait - but glad I stuck with it,

It amuses me the way people ask 'any good?' about these high end products! It costs 2 grand compared to the base level ones at 300 quid so obviously it's quite good!

Sorry not a useful response I know!
Like saying, is a private ride on a space shuttle to a space station any good???...😁

What do you use as your ride zwift?

Not really that great advice tbf, not everyone likes to go out for long bike rides and if you’re going to go out for 20 minute bike rides you’ll probably spend longer on safety checks and pumping tyres. Also it’s great glib advice in weather like we have now, not so easy to go and do in a thunderstorm or when it’s shotting it down, freezing, windy AF or snowing. Some people like that but not a lot. Likewise paying a sub isn’t that barmy because you’re subscribing to content. You’re not subscribing to the bike, you can have the bike without the sub. You’re subscribing to multiple daily classes which can be accessed at your leisure.

As for peloton, you have 4 options imo

1) Buy peloton

£1900-2200 plus £39 a month. Nice option if you can afford it but for me this is crazy money for what you get. If you finance the bike over 3 years you’re paying £100 a month including the sub! But you do get all the metrics and leaderboards etc

2) Buy a peloton knock off like echelon or Ajax

Bikes can be cheaper but subs are generally still £30+, I’d personally avoid this.

3) Buy any old spin bike and do YouTube classes or other apps

Ymmv!

4) Or do what I did and build a cheap peloton. Basically buy any bike you like, fit a tablet holder (£12) and cadence sensor (£29) and sync to a HRM and subscribe to the peloton app, it’s £12 a month which is a lot more palatable than £39.

I love spin classes, they’re short, they burn calories like crazy and I enjoy the music. I would previously go to the gym for them but obviously not that keen now, plus classes were generally on at like 5:30pm so a ballache trying to get there after work. I can hop on my bike any time I like - they’ve got live classes and you can access the back catalogue. The peloton classes themselves are fairly good with a good daily selection.i do go out on my real bike but it’s completely different to spinning and spinning is great for training and a quick sesh before work or at lunch etc (I work from home permanently now), and my partner can use it without us both doing gym subs. For many, they may Not live near a gym at all, or may not want to be around a gym in the current climate, so I can see the appeal.

I’ve got hue lights as well so get the authentic spin studio vibe 😂

The bike I use is a bodymax b15 which has rrp of £499 atm but you’ll find a glut of them for sale that people bought at lockdown start - I got mine for £200 in basically as new condition, so cost me very little setup. Conversely my outdoor bike cost about 7x that but I love both.

If you like spin classes, you can make any of those 4 options work and it’s what fits your budget and lifestyle

Sorry just realise option 5 - smart turbo trainer with existing bike... but that’s more for indoor “outdoor” bike practice rather than spin class, or zwift!
Hi Fair , you seem to be the go to man for this.
I have a few questions if you have the time. They are probably stupid I will warn you.
Do you need a tablet - if I was to just use my phone and cast that to a tv would that work? Is it just a comfort thing or do you need to constantly control things via the tablet??

Secondly with your set up do you get the full peloton experience? Presumably the cadence sensor and hrm are connected into the peloton app? Any more details on what is happening here would be useful?

Cadence sensor and HRM do not connect to Android on the Peloton app. I bought a cheap static bike after my cardiologist warned me I wasn't doing enough exercise and got a second-hand ipad air from swappa.com so that I could get that set up. The only bit you can't get is resistance. I just guessed at what their resistance levels equate to on mine. Works for me and a total of less than $500 and $14 a month seems pretty good value.

It seems crazy that those who buy the bike have to them pay $40 a month though if you just sign up you only pay $13.

Must be because everything on their bike connects to the app, but I can't see that that makes it worth the difference.

Ok I just need the bike and bits then I’m sure I’ll be struggling to connect it all up! Luckily through Vitality Health Insurance they have given me six months peloton for free, so a small saving there.

I liked that I got a 30 day trial with the Peloton app and the fact that I can choose what music I want. Only problem there is that classic rock sounds awful on the ipad, so that was another $15 for a bluetooth speaker.

These things are generally for people who have too much time on their hands and nothing better to spend their money on. Hence why a lot have probably been sold recently. Seriously, who would bust a couple of k on an exercise bike and then fork out a monthly sub the equivalent of a gym membership to use it.
That's what I thought when I first heard of it and saw it - i'm of the same opinion as you but it seems it is very popular.

This is what makes me laugh when people mock spinning. It's not sitting there just moving your legs, they're good workouts and if they're not, its because you haven't done the settings as instructed. The only thing I have missed about my gym has been spin classes & even then I could take and leave some of the instructors, so love being able to select my own.

I quite fancied a Tacx smart trainer (one of the higher end ones) but I don't want to buy another bike and would do my head in changing rear wheel all the time and sods law would be on the opposite device to what I want to use.
I think anyone mocking a spin class has not done one. They are indeed hard work and great exercise.
