Peloton exercise bike

Liz/ Fair,

No, I get that, I know they're not the same, it's extremely obvious. I'm saying one is extremely expensive (for the average person), for such a limited single option. It's priced well out of budget for most people I would expect.

I'm just saying the average person could do spinning as and when they like at classes, or on a cheaper spin bike, and still have a ton left over to actually do some real cycling on the road or up the hills etc, or even have £500 left over for a golf membership or a season ticket etc. The same way you could spend £200 on a road bike and not get an indoor trainer etc.

I wonder how many people using a 2k spin bike and subscription have ever actually been out on a road or mountain bike with the right gear etc.

If people like spinning, enough to spend 2k and £500 a year, then good luck to them, at least they're doing something.

The use case to me was previously not that compelling but Covid I can see the appeal. I used to spin 5 nights a week before taking current job but I can’t imagine a time soon where I’d set foot in a spin studio now, and with most classes at 5pm-5:30pm getting there is now impossible even if I could. Will be plenty of people that don’t live near a gym or who can’t get to classes or just don’t want public classes

Accessible 24/7, for everyone in the house, and high quality content updated love daily is their selling point and they do this well

I’m a fair weather cyclist and out all summer but I have no interest in cycling in the cold, wet, snow, strong winds etc so being able to get on my pretend peloton is quite handy, but can see why people may not want to cobble one together, and some people are more than willing to pay for it and if they can afford it I’d not begrudge them it

I understand why people may view peleton as expensive because it is.
That said, as others have posted, it's well put together and since I signed up last march I've used it for over 3,000 minutes. In all honesty, that's time and money well spent imv.
I don't have much time and the ability to run down into my basement and spend 20-30 mins has made a huge difference.
Also peleton offers more than just cycling. I've not used the other options but they have running, yoga , boot camps etc.
A family can share the subscription and that will help with the cost.

Another point that I'll add is : people will happily spend £40 pm on take-aways etc , booze, sky etc without thinking about it.
You don't need the peleton/ equivalent bike , if you're not sure do as others have and get something more affordable.

Their content is good and the bike is ok. It just surprises me that they almost punish people for buying the bike by charging £40 for the classes. The pricing Model should be flipped so it’s £13 if you have the bike or £40 to use a tablet / tv but I’m not complaining because that’s obviously what I do 😂 I’ve tried some of the other content and it’s ok but for me I just access for the spinning content. Good for those that use it. Loud music, flashy disco lights and a fan. Plus a good class 👌🏻

My one criticism is the warmup and cool down feels too long and casual on most classes so to get w good workout you really have to focus on the longer classes. Be good if there was a way to just have a warmup / cool down static season and the 45 min / 1 hour classes be an actual session of that much exercise. The length of these seem to scale up with length of classes unless I’m just imagining it

Just Checked and a 20 min ride is 3 min warmup 16 min ride, 1 min cool down

30 min climb ride is 9 min warmup 19 min climb and 2 min cool down

45 min hiit climb 11 min warmup 32 min ride and 2 min cool down

Most spin classes I’ve been to have just done a warmup track so it’s a couple of minutes. Probably a minor complaint and probably just me but if doing 45 mins to an hour I don’t want to spend 10+ mins doing warmup. It’s skippable at least if not doing it live

Fair points . I don't have the actual bike so I use the£13 app too.
They do have rides that aren't instructor lead. I only realised about that a few weeks okay. You could maybe consider using one of those for a warm up/down? They are the scenic rides.
I think there are now other companies who allow you to rent the bike per month . Peleton isn't the only show in town.

Yeah I’ve done the scenic rides they are fairly limited tho, occasionally the route just fades quickly on and out too, I’m guessing where they have encountered traffic or something. Actually just watched one i did before and a car went past so not even that 😂 no idea then

Like I say not too bad as you can skip it when it’s not live and just do two work lights. I’ve looked at some of the others like echelon but their classes aren’t as good and frequent and they don’t have the huge back catalogue due to being newish

Statto: What are you looking at? I'm planning another bike but can't deide between a Gravel and a Mountain....Have told Mrs W yet :ROFLMAO:
Canyon Endurace CF SL Disc 8.0 Aero Di2

Wanted a black one, but they didn't have one, so I had accepted the red, problem is, this was available for April delivery yesterday, but today it isn't, so that's unlikely to happen before summer now. Availability on bikes is shocking (especially in small size or 51-54), it seems every short ar$e has taken up cycling or upgraded, and the manufacturers have stopped building.

The other option was look at the Aeroad, but I've never ridden one and a bit scared off that it might be uncomfortable. There's next to no weight difference and I don't climb Alp D'Huez, so not worried about climbing being a little harder, they just look so much better. I know looks shouldn't matter, but it does.

Effectively looking around 5k and want wireless, so Ultegra Di 2 seems the sensible choice. Already got a Felt VR3, but it's a little small, so going to make that my winter/ turbo bike, I think.

Really wanted to go the whole hog and get proper fit/ setup for the bike I want, but it's nigh on impossible with the current situation.

Love the look of the Canyon bikes!!

I had the same problem with Ribble last year - they kept pushing the delivery date back and it took 5 months in the end - It was worth the wait though

Yet they've pretty much sold out, so there's obviously a market there. Some people choose to spend $$$ on video games, others on a peloton, others on gambling, others on a handbag. Just because you don't see the value, doesn't mean others dont.

Does it matter ? How many people who are using a 2k spin bike have ever been out on a speedboat, or played table tennis - it's an equally valuable comparison.

My wife has a peloton, she also has normal bikes, however she likes spin classes and doesn't equate a ride into town on her Pashley with a basket on the front, or a ride into the country on her road bike, as a replacement for a peloton class.
Of course they've sold out, practically everything in the world bike related is sold out, but don't get your nickers in a twist.

It's my opinion only, people can spend what they like on what they like, and even better if they don't need bank loan or overdraft to do it. Obviously, if someone's on 20k a year, this is going to price them well out of the market (unless they do nothing else or live with their mum) that is kind of my point. I don't expect you or Fair are in that bracket, and I'm not, but I'm putting myself in their shoes.
Also, if someone's only using this once a week it's probably not cost effective either, for >90% of people. If it's used often and stuck at for years, then fair enough, but I think most would get bored of that, again, my opinion only, each to their own. There's a lot you can do for £100 a month, and most people could spend half and be just as happy the same way someone could buy a £200 road bike instead of a £3,000 one and still get 90% of the enjoyment.

I've probably used about 100 different gyms, 100 different exercise bikes, spin bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes etc and I know about 50 people that bought exercise/ spin only bikes, and about 50 of them are now expensive clothes horses. I appreciate most of those bought are terrible, and this isn't, but equally it's 30 x the price. I know one guy bought the NordicTrack, and he's been on it once, in four months

Peloton is obviously aimed at the classes, and people that like those, which is 100% fine, but I just don't seem to know anyone that has started those sort of classes and stuck at them for more than 6 months, or done enough where they've thought (I need this at home, instead of at the gym around all that other 500k worth of equipment). People get bored very, very easily or give up on exercise very very easily. That's why I gave the options to save money or cover about 10 bases with the same cost.

Yeah, they're a good buy too, with the direct to user sales method, it's tough on the local bike shops mind, which I don't like, as I would love to support them, but I'm already unsure how they stay in business, as they're all so small.

Would love a gravel bike, or converting my felt to a gravel bike, but we don't have any gravel haha!

Aye, totally get that for you then, makes sense if you're doing it that often, but if you can wok out 5 times a week, then you're not working hard enough :p
It's a flashy product and marketed very well and some of the instructors look good, but some look like right annoying idiots, would drive me up the wall.

Yeah I was a fair weather cyclist, but I've realised the main issue why I never bothered with winter was my kit was terrible. Terrible kit is fine in summer, but in winter it's a big no no, especially under 10 degrees, and I won't go out if it's <3 degrees/ risk of ice, dark or very windy, not now that I have Zwift.

Since I got some good bibtights, overboots, gloves, hat, baselayers, thermal tops and a wind vest, it's been a gamechanger and very enjoyable.
As the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad kit. Good kit is expensive though!

Stats, as I said, started last April and I've done over 3000 minutes. I've a mate whose done 12000 and lost over 30lbs... It can be done but you've made valid points.

Do you see no irony in criticising Peloton on cost as just being a spin bike whilst eyeing up a £4700 bike for yourself?

If you apply your own logic you could simply buy various cheaper ones that almost do what you want them to couldn't you?

You're right, just showing it's all about what works for the individual and within their budget.
Did a lovely 30 peleton ride today whilst on a zoom meeting.

Everyone is quite different when it comes to exercise but as the original poster stated this product is probably aimed at the over 50 age group as it ties into all the other lifestyle situations which seem to occur around that age. I packed in running at my mid thirties and have been cycling and spinning ever since— can’t get enough of it to be honest. There’s so many great reasons to spin — health and safety tie on perfectly to this and most of the replies seem to focus on this subject. Whether or not the Peloton product makes sense is up to the individual as it is fairly costly. However, if you’re making a clean break from the gym then perhaps it’s worth considering— bottom line is health and safety and the joys of not pounding your body on the cement!

Expat I think it's for those who may be a little crunched for time too.
Most people who I know who have it have kids and/or work long hours.
