Play offs and penalties

Costs too much to go to a football match these days for there not to be a result on the day. Different for folk in the 70s hitchhiking everywhere and paying tuppence and an onion on the gate to get in.
You don't HAVE to go, and the games wouldn't have to be held at Wembley.

What's the difference though, it's another match, that's all.

You mustn't have been around when replays were the norm, some of Boro's best games have come in replays.

I wasn't, no.

But I'm glad I wasn't.

"Eeeh, do you remember the time we had to play Everton 3 times in a week because we just kept drawing?"

Does not thrill me.
The excitement of that equaliser would not have been any less if the match had went to extra time instead.

It happened in extra time.

First time in history that all the play-off finals have went to extra time unless there's a last minute goal here.

Is it the only big game you've heard of going to a replay?

Is what?

The Boro Everton matches?
No, I just mentioned it because I assume that's included in "some of Boro's best games" you're talking about being replays.

I've always actively disliked replays as a concept.

They're unsatisfying and just had extra fixtures and complications for teams as a "reward" for failing to win a game.

We were arguably partly relegated in our most (in)famous season because of them.

They'll be scrapped entirely in the next decade, I expect.

Fair enough, you don't want to see an extra game of football. I can't agree, I'd rather see another game, we're at the end of the season so no disruption would be necessary.

And let's be honest, the replays meant an extra game three or four days later, not a major problem back then, with transport wasn't so easy but a problem now, for some reason.

You love the sanitary Sky production that is all the young fan knows. That's fair enough.

The League Cup Final against Leicester was the day I decided cup final replays are nonsense. It’s the final. The big occasion. People have spent a small fortune to be there. Then at the end…..nothing. Let’s play again at an inferior venue sometime later. I’d rather it had gone to pens and we lost than having the weekend turn into a non-event.

World Cups and European competitions don’t go to replays. Neither do cricket matches, tennis, golf, etc. I wonder why that is if replays are such a good idea.
