Players picked by Southgate not playing regularly for their clubs.

Players picked for the Euro national team and they're not playing regularly for their clubs.
Conor Gallagher, Kalvin Phillips and Harry Maguire, so these three are not good enough to play week in week out for their clubs, but are good enough to play for England!!
Training week in week out, is not the same as game time on the pitch.
How many other national teams do this? pick players that are not playing for their clubs.

There's only Maguire of those three that will start. Surprisingly he's played in 24 games this season for United.
The other two you mentioned, I think the problem is central midfield is an area England are a bit short on when it comes to international class players. I would call up Ward Prowse myself mind.

The first 2 are completely a joke to be fair. I'm sure I read Phillips hasn't even played 90 minutes of PL football this season.

A simple ridiculous decision to take either of them.

As for Maguire, then we all know why he's there. He's Southgate's puppet. He could continue to be dropped by Utd for their big games, and continue to perform below par (for a club of Utd's level) and he'd still be picked in the squad.

Southgate isn't the only manager who picks his favourites though.

I think we could pretty much go through every single England manager (except probably Fat Sam as he only had 1 game!) and identify their favourites.

There aren't many English defensive midfielders playing in the top flight.

I think it's a fair comment about Maguire especially though, there are still plenty of English defenders getting regular game time that are being overlooked.

I didn't mind it for the World Cup, but this is a new tournament cycle and Maguire has hardly played.

Unfortunately the big clubs hoover up all the English players to fill quotas. Hence Phillips sat on the bench. Maguire should be playing at a smaller club like spurs.

I'm sure other teams suffer similarly. Italy have struggled in recent years. I think they even called up a Sunderland player not long ago. Jesus was Brazil's striker while he was sitting on the bench at city.

Maguire is usually v good for England.

This is the start of a new cycle, but our toughest game is the first one..I'm not surprised he's going with a team he knows tonight.

I expect other call ups and newer names going forward though.

The increase of subs allowed hasn't helped in my opinion. Players are happy enough coming on twice a month now, in the past they'd have not got a look in.

Southgate came out with something recently saying the England might have to start looking at the championship such is the dearth of quality of English players in the premier league
" the number of English players starting premier league games has dropped to a season-low of 28 per cent"
He mentioned why Philips is in the squad as he says there is only him, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson who play in that role who are English

Weird isn’t it.
Loads of options in the forward players, decent full backs but much more limited in CB and DM.
Rice picks himself. Couldn't Bellingham play alongside? We’ve still got so much talent further forward.
Saka, Foden, Grealish, Madison, Mount, Rashford, Kane,
Plus plus plus.

It is as much a reflection of the competitiveness of the EPL as opposed to a dearth of quality English players. Top EPL teams are choosing from the best players in the world, not just England.

I’m surprised people are surprised Gareth will start Phillips as before the World Cup he went on record and made no secret of h the e fact his ideal pairing is rice and Phillips.

If you recall Bellingham and foden (to a degree) were largely bit part players when Phillips was fit.

From 2021

He added: "We contemplated making a change for a long time but our attacking players were all having an impact. Declan and Kalvin giving us that stability in front of defence was key. We stuck with it. Sometimes you have to hold your nerve and stick with what you believe to be right."

I can't see him starting with Phillips. It'll either be 433 with Henderson, Rice and Bellingham, or 343 with Rice and Bellingham.

I didn't even know we had been drawn against Italy. I thought it might make for an interesting qualifying campaign for once until I found out that 2 teams go through.

Calvin Phillips in the starting lineup and never plays for his club. Utterly ridiculous by Southgate.
I don’t even rate Phillips for Leeds and think he’s very limited but it’s like a insult to all the midfielders to me
