Police

With all the nonsense of not investigating Johnson properly, racism clearly prevalent against minorities, how can we continue to have any faith in the police? The lack of investment and number of police make the job incredibly difficult but when they continue to openly make mistake after mistake (and this isn't just the Met Police there have been instances across the country) then how can we uphold the rule of law? Along with other professions it's about time we made sure that the vetting process is vastly improved and that corruption is prosecuted very publicly. Lessons from the past haven't been learnt or even acknowledged if you look at Orgreave for example and it's about time there was an independent body (not the IOPC as they clearly are as fit for purpose as Ofgem are).

I think every now and again, for example the miner’s strike, Hillsborough and now Partygate you get reminded just how political and establishment influenced the police actually are.

Power and control over people, and who has it, is very, very carefully managed in this country.

The Met in particular appear to be in complete turmoil and I have never known a force so heavily politicised and showing signs of inner splits - some questioning their own leaders ability to be independent.

I think there are many factors that see UK policing in such a state, but amongst them a couple seem to jump out.

The introduction of PCC's instantly politicised the policing agenda, when we all know that works against independence and impartiality. The fact that chief constables are hired and fired by PCC's renders many on them impotent and the consequence is many chief officers are solely driven by self-protection and promotion if their own career. I think there is a leadership vacuum in may forces as a result.

Also, the austerity cuts under the Conservative government has been catastrophic, both in terms of services and pay and conditions. Put simply policing attracts generally poorer candidates, who have less resources and support to do their job. This, predictably, equates to a failing system in many places.

Vetting isn't the issue, because detailed vetting already exists. Replacing the IOPC isn't either, because forces statistically hold themselves to account in those cases investigated internally, than those led by the IOPC.

Labour invested in the causes of crime, not nit the crime itself and the Conservatives systematically dismantled all the exceptional progress that was made.

The Police gather evidence and generally it is then up to the Courts to decide on the outcome. Police Officers do a dangerous job, most do it without fear or favour. They sacrifice an awful lot of their own family time, working long hours and risk being seriously injured or worse trying to keep people they have never met safe.

Mate who is a CID DS is just utterly demoralised and dejected and is counting down to retirement. Too much work, not enough staff and when scrotes do get to court they are given a slap on the wrist or a puny sentence which will not deter them. Every sympathy with the good coppers out there (very, very difficult job)......sadly the bad ones are tarnishing all of them.
