Possible bad news about SA variant

I'm not sure what problems I am causing. Posts on here about people dying, high infection rates, lockdowns, lockdown flaunters etc have the potential to cause just the same 'problems'. Let's just ban all posts on Covid eh?

If anything this should encourage us to get the vaccine and stick to the rules.
Theres no suggestion of any "ban", but when there is a continuous drip of misinformation. unsubstantiated claims and opinions stated as "facts" - we have to be careful when, where and what we say.
Its about others, not just ourselves.
There isnt an argument, but we all have to take responsibility.

I'm not sure I have posted my opinion as fact, posted misinformation or unsubstantiated claims - I commented on a news story, since linked. I have said that if the vaccine doesn't work now we are in a mess. If we lose the ability to do this I worry.

I get where you are coming from and as such i have asked Rob to make a decision on the post. I will abide by his decision.

I'll let Rob make the decision as to wether to pull it or not @parnabyscrosses. This is a board for adults, I'm only reporting what is in the media which is what thousands of threads before this have done and thousands after will do.

And for those preaching about anxiety etc maybe don't be calling me out for posting my fears - speaking about things that worry you can help anxiety too. Mental health isn't a one way street.

If you would like a source unfortunately the easiest one to find is the Daily Mail, a publication I do not like to link or usually read. But when coupled with Patrick Vallance expressing concerns and it being on the News At 10 I thought that the point was valid enough to post.

And as I say, I hope it's rubbish and the key will be in the coming month if anyone in the UK gets the SA strain and ends up early poorly.

My post isn't to scare, it is to encourage debate and for people to highlight hopefully something I have missed that makes this news very wrong.
When I posted about the Pfizer deaths in Norway you accused me of scaremongering for sharing a BMJ report and said that admin should remove it and you knew what my intentions were. Perhaps you should practice what you preach my friend

Listen, this is not specifically about you or your post.
Its a general comment based on observations on media platforms and boards like this.
Its not personal so please dont treat it as such.
We all have to take responsibility - and be aware of what we all do and say - because it effects vulnerable people negatively and can compound mental health issues. (y)

Sorry boss, your post was one too late, I amended it before you stuck your oar in.

I get you now, I agree, and have since amended it (y)

"Those preaching about anxiety"

Nobody says it's not a board for adults but that doesn't mean it's ok to post unsubstantial rumours about things that could have serious impacts on peoples lives. Well done on changing the name though, that's much better. As for preaching about anxiety, nobody is doing that, I think they are just highlighting that it exists and at the moment we need to be especially considerate about things like that.

It isn't claims & opinions or unsubtantial rumours, it is initial findings from scientific research in a rapidly changing environment being reported in respected scientific journals.

For example reported in Science...
in a recent modeling study, researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine calculated that South Africa's 501Y.V2 variant could be 50% more transmissible but no better at evading immunity, or just as transmissible as previous variants but able to evade immunity in one in five people previously infected. “Reality may lie between these extremes,”
Undoubtably as further research is undertaken the findings will the clarified with greater reliability and we will find out whether we are f***ed or fine.

But, as from the start of this pandemic your best defence for not catching it is mask, ventilation, distance & hand washing.

"Covid could potentially win"

What's all that about? I don't have an issue with the topic as it is incredibly relevant and I'd agree it's concerning but that headline is worded, I hope not deliberately, to incite fear and worry.
Yeah I'm curious as to what that means? Win what?

The original post and its title was the last thing I needed to read before going to bed. My heart sank and it induced thoughts of the ‘end of the world is nigh’ type

it took me a while to get to sleep.

the edited post would not have done that to me.

Like many posters I've read a lot about virology since the emergence of covid and for the virus to 'win' it would have to mutate into a form that doesn't lead to the death of its host!

Thats how the vast majority of the most successful virus' mutate.

Sorry, that was not the intention.

It's been edited and I have said sorry. I can tell you what I meant but in the spirit of my apology and the upset my initial post may have caused some on here it might be best to move on.
