Qatar 22

His choice.
I know and I agree..... it should be voluntary but being in the public eye and very much a role model should he explain his reasons why?
I guess he's almost in an impossible situation?
And the Windies player Brathwaite said "We get on very well but I want to know from him what his reason was."
What a mess.

He should give the reason, show some honesty.

Yep, I think that's the point here - very few people will have an issue with him not doing it (although it seems odd to jeopardise his position in the national team over it). "Personal reasons" is the "I'm not a racist but..." argument redefined isn't it?

It's his choice and he has every right. I object to players being forced to do this. He's a great player and I hope this doesn't ruin his career.

My partner is mixed race and we've both said that neither of us would take the knee - we believe it is a meaningless gesture.
I've got no issues with anybody else expressing themselves however they see fit.

Very fair and you obviously have much more lived experience of this than the rest of us.

I can understand the objection, to an extent, given how pilloried someone like Keir Starmer has been for taking a knee.

It’s just ultra spicy in this case given that it’s South Africa.

I don't get the role model argument that is used from time to time with sportsmen and women. If one of my children looked to a celebrity as a role model I would feel I had failed as a parent.

It seems to me that once you invite someone into your home via TV we somehow think we know them, are qualified to speak to their intention and integrity and that they then somehow owe us something. None of this is true, not even a little bit

Enjoy if you go. Personally I like to see the country when I go to World Cups, not just hotels and swimming pools (Which could be anywhere in the desert) I hate Dubai for the same reason.
Way more to the UAE than just hotels and swimming pools. Some amazing camping and outdoor stuff to do

Obscene - You could argue that for ordinary/poor people in Brazil, SA etc the trickle down on investment would be beneficial, but in Qatar, the only people that will benefit are the mega rich and Sheiks because there arent't any poor people apart from the labourers
And the labourers are foreign nationals who cant get citizenship.
