Redcar & Cleveland Council Leader to receive £5,095 pay rise

Although the council leader will still be on a lot less than her counterparts in Stockton, Darlington & Hartlepool (Middlesbrough have a mayor), should they be giving her a rise when householders in the R & C have just had a council tax rise of 3.9%.

Personally, I think she should refuse it.

Are those numbers her pay or just her allowance - if it’s her pay then I don’t begrudge her it given she is working 65 hrs per week.

Typical Privately Owned National Media Organisation [ https://www.reachplc.com/our-newsbrands] putting a negative slant on a public authority.
21K a year is a pittance for the responsibilities and duty of care her decisions make to others lives.
If you want responsible leaders - you pay them the going rate.
I get that, but is now the time to be upping her allowance, when we have just been hit with a 3.9% council tax rise.

I empathise, but you can get more than that loading pallets for Amazon.
The Council put the Poll Tax up because Central Government controls funding.
21K is pittance.
I wonder if the Editor of The Gazette would get out of bed for under 21K a year?

She is a council leader not the chief exc of the council. She is an elected representative and this is not a job

as someone that has been a councillor previously I can categorically state that her allowances are highly paid for the physical work she will do. She has little input in the day to day running of the authority and basically signs paperwork and chairs the meeting (she doesn’t need to even chair the committees unless she chooses to)

I did the role as chairman for free for a town council... I could not look anyone in the eye for putting our precept up knowing I had feathered my own nest at their expense. I rather preferred it to be spent on something that mattered

If you are in a position to influence and make serious life - changing decisions affecting 137,000 people, not just for Redcar and Cleveland, but as a member of the Tees Valley Area Authorities, she deserves more than pocket money.

You literally couldn’t pay me enough to be a councillor and deal with people bleating in about council tax and other inane rubbish

her rise has nothing to do with 3.9% rises and everything to do funding. Simple as that really

She should get an increase but the same as what the R&C staff get which I’d imagine is about 2% at best ( could somebody kindly confirm ). Also her expenses break down .

Great point above about effectively being a puppet signing paperwork which she can do in bed If she wants .

Perhaps somebody more informed as me can detail her meeting attendance rate . I know a couple on TV authorities only attend a couple a year .

Sorry but this is a terrible take. Even the 21k is ridiculously low.

Another really poor and ignorant take. This isn't a parish council ffs.

And before anybody starts, I've not lived on Teesside for 15 years, I've no vested interest
