Replacing a defender with a winger

Wasn't the best of ploys. Wood Spence Coulson out on loan. Now I'm not saying any of them are world beaters and I'll be happy if they are getting minutes. But all are squad players and in a 46 game season you need a squad.

Bamba was on the bench. We probably could do with Spence and Coulson now though. No idea what we're going to do if they're both out for a while.

My mistake Sol was on the bench. But fact is we had a defensive change to make and we brought a young winger on to cover it. Lo and behold concede 5 minutes after.

The only real options we had were Tav to right back and a winger on to keep the same shape, or Tav to wing back and Bamba in to go to a back 3. I'm not sure that would have gone better for us though.

Dijksteel had spent most of the match wandering about in midfield and further forward anyway.
I think he was told to follow one of their players all game. Tav did the same at first when he went to right back.

Ridiculous putting Tav at RB. He could have brought Bamba on and moved Fry to RB.

Another option would have been to bring Jones on, have Jones and Tav as wing-backs, Peltier in the middle, Ikpeazu for Hernandez and go with two up front.

Jones was on, didn’t you see him?

Yeah, he was, which is why I'm not that bothered about Tavernier being a wingback in the match given he was so often dropping back to cover the position Dijksteel had left to follow the player.

We're just so poor at the back since the the turn of the year, and we were even when everyone was fit.

It was incredibly poor management to think that Isaiah Jones is a right back. It was actually a bit unfair to ask him to do that job when Howson could’ve covered there.

Jones looked so much better coming in from the left.

I was surprised Howson didn't drop in at right back, he's played there before.

That would have given us so many more options with attacking side of the team.
Siliki has played left back before. Not ideal but if Dijksteel and Bola are out for any amount of time it could be an option.

Was he man marking their number ten at times?

Even before he was injured Tav was repeatedly dropping in at right back to cover as Dijksteel was playing in front of the back four?

Both Spence and Coulson went on record saying they wanted first team football didn't they? You can't keep a bunch of unhappy players at the club and expect to have a good team spirit.

Howson is great at right back, but he probably wants him at the base of midfield.
Personally I would play him rb. Drop crooks and move Tav inside. Let's have a look at malley and see what he can do in there. And then either JLS or payero. You've got a much more mobile midfield then. I wouldn't fancy us pressing high with a slow defence but that certainly isn't the be all and end all.
And watmore should be getting more minutes. He's become the forgotten man this season.
