Reports that we may have to wear masks forever...

This is because the dominant respiratory pathogen is covid-19 not because you wear a mask.

It's very uncommon to have 2 floating around at the same time. Virology 1-0-1.

It's even less likely that influenza viruses and rhinovirus to co exist in the same season.

I'm not familiar with Virology 1-0-1. Do you have a link for folk with no experience to read this for ourselves?

I thought that the reduction in cold and flu might be related to social distancing and increased flu vaccinations? I'd be interested to read why this is not the case.

I have read an interesting article on Nature.com about this. It would appear when the schools went back in the UK colds cam back quite sharply. And TBH I think I've had a couple of mild colds towards the end of last year.

EDIT - here is the link for the article. Maybe those with Virology 1-0-1 might be better to comment on it and how accurate it is: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03519-3

Aren't people in Japan generally brought up to be courteous, polite and respectful toward their fellow humans? Our entitled, ever-expanding chav culture could do with picking up a few tips and oh how I wish it would (not a dig at the OP).

I'd be quite happy to wear a mask any time I had a cold if it means not passing it on/passing it to fewer people. I really don't get why some people treat it as some sort of infringement of their freedom, or as if they're being asked to put their dangly bits in a bear trap. I fear for these people if they ever have to encounter real trauma.

Sure no problem

Google viral interference

This article touches on it:-

But it is just a product of a little-understood phenomenon called “viral interference”: while one of these viruses holds sway in a person, or the population, for some reason the others can’t get a toehold. In September 2009, the swine flu pandemic that went on to sweep the world should have invaded Europe from the Americas. But the annual rhinovirus epidemic actually kept it at bay. The highly contagious new flu took over only when rhinovirus subsided, bumping RSV down the queue: RSV moved in only after that first wave of flu subsided.

Thanks for your snarky comment by the way, as always I don't pull things out of my ****. I find it frustrating when people put things down to wearing masks that have no basis in science and then when I provide actual science people like you try to rubbish it in favour of spreading the lie.

I do think its possible that we could be wearing them forever in shops and on public transport, a bit like seatbelts when they first came in. People didn't all want them, but they adapted because they were saving their own lives as well as others.

But they are gonna have to sort something out for glasses wearers, especially in winter. I went in Co-op just now and literally couldn't see a thing. As a result I was in there way longer than I otherwise would have been. That's not ideal. I am quite surprised no one has invented anything yet. Do visors work better I wonder?

And lip readers

I'm actually shocked at the amount of people willing to routinely wear a mask everytime they leave the house.

I dont really care what they do in Japan.

They do many things in the far East and middle East that wouldn't be accepted here but well you know we'll just run with this.
It’s such an insignificant thing that you barely notice, why is it such a problem?

Hmmmm, people like me. I never mentioned masks btw, just asked for your source. And I'm glad I did. That article says that they have no idea if viral interference apples with Covid.

Sometimes the simplest of answers is the easiest. When people don't come into contact with an infected person a virus struggles to spread itself. Not masks, but social distancing and people staying in their homes. Workplaces being shut. Pubs been shut. Friends and family not coming round. It's why the infection rates fall when we lock down.

So I think the snarky comment was deserved as not only have you misrepresented me as someone (in your words) pushing "wearing masks that have no basis in science" but when you proclaim to have provided 'science' you have just provided an article that says they don't know how Covid behaves with "viral interference", thus disproving your own point.

I see not much has changed over Christmas. You are still pushing your tin foil hat agenda. This time it's masks don't work, what's coming back next? Lockdowns don't work? Can we trust the vaccine?

I give up.

Erm of course they didn't know if it applied to covid but what you're witnessing across the globe and what we see historically for OTHER rhinoviruses suggests it does.

Linking to the guardian is tin foil hat now in your world view, try attacking the ball not the man for once in your life.

It will never happen in the western world for several reasons. It works in Asian countries because of the way they communicate that is less dependent on facial expressions. In the west a lot of communication is done through the facial muscles so we would loose that.

If you wanna wear a mask no one is stopping you, but let's be homest if you have a cold or flu, you shouldn't be out mixing with people, surely that would be the considerate thing to do, not go out infect the atmosphere but offer a little bit of protection by way of a mask.

If mask wearing is such a great idea, why weren't the people advocating on this thread doing it last year and the year before?

Load of nonsense getting talked here.

Call me old fashioned but I can remember the days when if you went into a bank wearing a mask you could be arrested. Nowadays, if you go into a bank NOT wearing a mask you can be arrested.

yeah go in their with a black mask and a black woolly hat, no chance they will recognise you

But some of us are really good looking. Hopefully they grant us an exemption

As a FMTTM June 2019 model (you'll note the prime month) I can confirm that we will receive an exemption.

Infact the unattractive people should wear them to give the rest of us a heads up to avoid. 😂

think a lot is to do with collective or individualistic societies where the far east are more collective and less selfish i.e. people wear a mask not to infect others whereas the individualistic even Capitalist societies everyone is just looking after themselves and more selfish, at the beginning a lot of people thought wearing a mask was just to protect themselves!

One theory is rice growing communities had to be more collective and work together to harvest rice as it was so labour intensive whereas Wheat and other crops was not so intensive people did not need to help each other as much but could be BS who knows

It doesn't answer the question of, if Asian folks are so considerate why are they going out with disease, surely the right thing is to do is to self isolate.

I always notice. I hate wearing it and I hope and prey that it does not become a permanent thing.

If you wish to then fair enough but I for one won't

The idea that you've put forward that Covid 19 is the reason less people have caught flu and not because of social distancing and mask wearing, seems to me to be at odds with the article you've posted a link to though.

It mentions that the first person outside of China to die of Covid also had flu, many of the people in Wuhan who had Covid also had flu, that there is concern that children returning to school catching cold and flu viruses may cause problems for people who develop covid and make it harder from them to recover. All of which show the two viruses can obviously coexist.

It does mention that there is some historical evidence that one virus may at times stop another taking hold, but it absolutely does not say that the reason flu infections are down is due to Covid, rather than social distancing or mask wearing. To be frank I think its irresponsible to say that it does, or to suggest its viroligist 1-0-1 that this is definitely the case.

If mask wearing is to become the norm then what does that do for say nightclubs? No more nights of going out looking for a 'mate'.
