Reports that we may have to wear masks forever...

If mask wearing is to become the norm then what does that do for say nightclubs? No more nights of going out looking for a 'mate'.
Everyone will have to wear a t-shirt with a picture of their face on it.

Masks would have been a good thing back in the day having that last dance at the Madison to Herb Alpert just before the lights came up and you realised you were smooching with a right old horrorshow!

The idea that you've put forward that Covid 19 is the reason less people have caught flu and not because of social distancing and mask wearing, seems to me to be at odds with the article you've posted a link to though.

It mentions that the first person outside of China to die of Covid also had flu, many of the people in Wuhan who had Covid also had flu, that there is concern that children returning to school catching cold and flu viruses may cause problems for people who develop covid and make it harder from them to recover. All of which show the two viruses can obviously coexist.

It does mention that there is some historical evidence that one virus may at times stop another taking hold, but it absolutely does not say that the reason flu infections are down is due to Covid, rather than social distancing or mask wearing. To be frank I think its irresponsible to say that it does, or to suggest its viroligist 1-0-1 that this is definitely the case.

It doesn't say it can't happen it's that it's very uncommon and at a population level stops spread of two viruses at once.

Like happens every year here... September to December is rhinovirus season then influenza comes and takes control afterward.

This year covid has been shown to displace the flu season. Google the term I used there's plenty of supporting anysis.

I always notice. I hate wearing it and I hope and prey that it does not become a permanent thing.

If you wish to then fair enough but I for one won't
No one is suggesting you wear them all of the time, not really sure where you have got that idea from. Just pointing out its a little bit daft to be so upset at the thought of wearing one, wouldnt even call it a minor inconvenience yet it could save someone else from serious illness

Oh dear oh dear for the dog reference.

I'm actually quite sad you're not grasping the reasons for wearing a mask. Sham you can't be more like the Japanese.
I always assumed the use of masks in Asia was more to deal with the shocking air pollution?

Oh christ I didn't realise it was you ST. You bored me last time. So it's the block for you.

Yes he keeps providing us with the science. It’s a pity though that his interpretation is wildly skewed to his own bias.

I don't understand I did ask you to Google the term I literally sent the first article with it in.

And I don't think it's even at odds with that article it explicitly states that's what they think will happen.

In the interest of fairness I'm more than open to learning why masks and social distancing are the reason it's not spreading, any science behind it?

I mean the only science I've ever seen about masks and influenza is that it has no impact on transmission but I'm willing to be shown to be wrong.

Again no. In China yes. In the rest of the far east no. Its to stop spreading your germs. Its been pointed out a few times now

The very fact that scientists say that the flu and cold season figures could explode any day suggests that the current measures in place, the flu jabs, social distancing, mask wearing, are having their effect on the low numbers - and not just the presence of another virus. It’s plain common sense not just science.

I have seen no report online which categorically states that flu numbers are down as a result of viral interference. There are references to it agreed but not enough to be able to stage categorically that it is very uncommon to have 2 floating around at the same time. Virology 1-0-1.

Fair enough, its behaviour is being repeated all over the place and there's evidence to suggest it's likely that but it's not categorical.

It will never happen in the western world for several reasons. It works in Asian countries because of the way they communicate that is less dependent on facial expressions. In the west a lot of communication is done through the facial muscles so we would loose that.

If you wanna wear a mask no one is stopping you, but let's be homest if you have a cold or flu, you shouldn't be out mixing with people, surely that would be the considerate thing to do, not go out infect the atmosphere but offer a little bit of protection by way of a mask.

If mask wearing is such a great idea, why weren't the people advocating on this thread doing it last year and the year before?

Load of nonsense getting talked here.
Obviously it would be ideal if people with the flu etc stayed at home, but if it’s something minor I.e sore throat or runny nose etc then wearing a mask in that instance would seem a good idea to me

Knock yourself out then you don't need legislation.
