Retained list is out

No offence but hall, lumley. Fisher, Daniels and miniz contributed very little this season so some wages saved there to direct towards players that will make an impact in the first team at least.

I’ve got nothing to bring to this, I won’t lie, just frustrated we failed to extend the contracts of grant hall and joe lumley, I can see this one coming back to bite us

Sometimes we release a youngster who was promising etc, happened with Malley I think? But yeah, ultimately it isn’t exactly big news that we’ve released 4 players who haven’t played a single match this season.
Alfie Doherty is a good kid that I knew from his time at LJS and always seemed destined to make it. I do hope he and all the others find a new club.

A handful of out-of-contract senior professionals will leave the club this summer.

Goalkeeper Luke Daniels and defender Darnell Fisher, who made his first appearance in almost two years in the final league game of the season after a lengthy injury, are both set to depart.

And they are joined by Grant Hall and Joe Lumley, who spent last season on loan at Rotherham United and Reading respectively.

Also free to move on elsewhere are Isiah Cornet, Joe Ridley, Oliver Swan, and Alfie Doherty, along with scholars Louie Evans, Ash MacCarthy, and Tylah Wallace-Ming.

Contract extensions have been offered to Jeremy Sivi and Isaac Fletcher, while Fenton John, Henry Popple, and Nathan Simpson will all step up as first-year professionals.

In addition, the loans of Cameron Archer, Ryan Giles, Alex Mowatt, Rodrigo Muniz, Aaron Ramsey and Zack Steffen have all come to an end.
We’d like to thank all the players for their contribution and wish them well for the future.

Not sure to be honest, Brynn seems the better goalie out of the 2 and is young enough still to be coached to play that way. So maybe a loan out to a team who play a similar style to us could be the most beneficial?
I dunno about changing someone in a way where they would be good enough to play out from the back, at Champo and probably prem level too. If you aren't used to doing that by 16-18 then it's going to be tough.

Steffen's probably a better outfield player than Northern League level, and you aint coaching someone to that level when they're 22. It would be hard enough to coach a League 2 keeper who is already good at playing out from the back.

Maybe not changing someone but trying to make him improve in certain aspects. If he’s a really good keeper in his own right I’m sure he will appreciate trying to improve all aspects of his game to give him the best chancing of forging at out a career at the highest level he can.

From what I hear it may be a strength of his anyway

Oh yeah, definitely, people can certainly improve, but hard to make a keeper play out to the level requried when they've been told to welly it for 22 years. It's probably harder than having to coach a striker into being a defender, and vice versa.

It's a risk/ reward thing too, you get the most out of the keepers who play out and who can play the harder passes and take more apparent risk, as it draws more attackers in (which frees more space behind). Just rolling it around the back without drawing anyone in doesn't really do much, but this is still better than welding it in most cases, unless you've got a lighthouse up front who is an anmial.

Surely more u23s will leave. I liked look of max howells but his contract is up this summer.

David de Gea is the prime example of this. No way will they ever be able to convert him j to being comfortable with a ball at his feet

Yeah, there are some omissions but Boro are pretty bad at announcing the contract lengths of the young players.

Howells is a Y2 scholar so I'm guessing with them not saying anything he will go on to be a Y3 and final year scholar (without a pro contract yet). There are some others that applies to as well - eg N Fisher, Costello, McCormick.

Of the u21s I would have thought it possible that Bilongo, Sykes, James and Robinson could have been out of contract but clearly not - having said that it seemed a forgone conclusion that Robinson would leave at the end of the season

So it's a bit odd he isn't mentioned - unless they are waiting for his season to finish (in the L2 play off final)

Also interesting that we have 'offered' a contract to Fletcher but he presumably hasn't accepted yet.

You’ve lost me, I open most threads, your point again?
You opened a thread which was clearly about the retained list. Which suggests that you were interested in the retained list. You then questioned why people are interested in the retained list.

Yeah, good example, and by god they've tried.

He's a great shot-stopper, when in form, but so much of a hindrance possession wise, unless they play with a big lump up top, and the big lumps up top they keep buying have been awful. They don't have anyone in midfield or up front who is actually good in the air, who can also play football. They were also paying him ~400k a week, which is terrible value, probably explained why he didn't go, and they didn't want him going for nothing as he's worth money to someone. He kind of locked them in before, and then locked them in again, so they had to offer him a new long-term deal, for 120k a week for 6 years, but that alone is costing them 36m! They need a keeper who can kick well enough for a quick counter attack, or play the ball about for possession based, but what they have is an expensive keeper who is never going to suit their styles, not in todays games.

They probably look at it like the only good keepers with their feet are expensive, and most of the available ones are not that great with their hands, so it scares them off. They have a history with some really dodgy keepers mind, and their fans can't hack their keeper making howlers (even though De Gea goes through phases of this also). It's a bad roundabout for them.

It may seem wild, but Steffen may actually suit them, but I expect they would be aiming higher than him.

Kane would also make so much sense to them, but they just can't seem to get him.
