Riga in Latvia

Anyone been, is it worth a visit, thinking of going for a long weekend, visit the Christmas Markets and see some of the sights?

The one in Latvia? Is there more than one?
I enjoyed it some good bars, apparently not as cheap as it used to be

Went earlier this year for a few days with the lads. Strange place. To be honest it’s not somewhere I’d ever rush back to and would certainly never take the Mrs.

And here

Went a few year ago and enjoyed it. -3c so proper Baltic , some good bars in the old quarter, especially a cellar bar called ' folkklubs ALA pagrabs ' which was always busy but good , live music , great food and cheap, and £1 a pint . Lots of graffiti , could be dodgy in the subways at night which were full of homeless people.
Always said we would go back , but in the warmer months.

Nice enough for a new city/country to explore but wouldn’t rush back. I get emails all the time about flights from Newcastle and it’s probably the cheapest flights on offer at the moment with ryanair

Seconded - Gdansk.

Riga is great, we went a few years back in Jan (it was -20c most days). The history of the place is incredible and so recent - it's definitely worth learning about the place while you're there. We took in the old KGB building - haunting but fascinating.

The Central Market is massive and well worth a stop off for lunch.

Craft beer scene is really good too, we ventured to a brewery on an industrial estate just outside town but I'm pretty sure there are loads more good pubs and bars more central!

I think Pagrabs is where I ordered the "pork knuckle" and was presented with a cooked pig's head. An interesting experience. There's a very good jazz club opposite if memory serves.

They bloody love ice hockey and given the fact that they were in the Russian/Asian league at the time (this might have changed!) it was on almost constantly day and night in the pubs, given the huge time differences involved.

What Priv says.

Went a number of years back. Suspect its still the same but more expensive.

If youfancy the baltics Tallinn is much better than Riga IMHO.

Although the old zepelín hangars are a sight to behold
