RIP the Duke of Edinburgh

are we in the "round on anyone that doesn't say 100% respectful" stage? I assume this standard will be followed for all celebrities that die in the future, no jokes, no objectivity about their life?

As a republican, I can absolutely feel sorry for his families loss, he has children and grandchildren that I'm sure will miss him and everyone has the right to feel personal grief at his loss, but please stop rounding on anyone that doesn't share your same feelings of grief.

Come on mate, leave it out. Let's not have this thread derailed so that it develops into a slanging match.

I thought the queen wearing black was respectful... I wasn't trying to be funny or anything

It was more a question because Queen Victoria did it

I think we're in an entirely different time now, I doubt many people wear black long term anymore.
It was unusual that Victoria did it in the 1800s.

Without taking away from the sadness of it, Prince Philip was 99 and I don't think that his death has taken anyone by surprise, I'm sure the Queen herself knew this situation was coming.
Prince Albert died at 42, in what was his prime.

Sometimes, if you haven't something nice to say, don't say anything.
which is why I'm not going to say anything negative about him, like I said if you feel grief show it. But lets not forget that people waded in with jokes and more objective critique of the deceased character within minutes of Thatcher and Jackson dying.

BoroMart I usually agree with pretty much every one of your posts, and like you I am not a Royalist at all. However, the post I was responding to was doing nothing other than trying to derail the thread and posted to court controversy surely you can see that?

And though I am no Royalist, I still recognise that Prince Philip was a husbad, a father and so on. On threads such as these it's much more polite and respectful not to start dragging things into the gutter as I'm sure most will agree.

I don't think you will see her conducting her royal responsibilities, I think this will prompt her to abdicate and make Charles King. Just my opinion.
Sad news

but the queen will never abdicate she has all but succeeded her duties to Charles now but she’ll never officially abdicate not after her uncle.

So did I, I said eactly the same, if people feel grief then that's for them. But if the standard is when anyone dies objectivity isn't allowed, then there are a hell of a lot of people that haven't followed that in the past on this board, some are probably the same people that are rounding on people already. I will guarantee that when Blair kicks it, that barely any of the people expecting 100% respect for Philip will show it to Blair.

Duke of Edinburgh's flying visit to Billingham in 1963
I was there as part of our Primary School lining Finchale Avenue on his way to the Town Square. Queen was supposed to come but she was expecting Eddie and cried off. Eminently forgettable afternoon, stood for ages and the motorcade swept past, couldn't even see into the cars.

"Usually, the Queen is only really known to wear black when in mourning or for Remembrance occasions"

i would fully expect if the queen is to address the nation in the next few days, which is likely, then we will see her in black. the mourning period has been set at 8 days so if there is are photos of her during this period then it will probably see her dressed in black. following the 8 days there is to be an additional 30 days of mourning so not sure what would happen then if she was to make any public appearance

Deserves credit for his DofE work, I know many young people who's lives were improved by it.

Just had a message from work, " out of respect please stop working for the rest of the day, cancel any appointments".

Every cloud .... wonder if we'll get a national day off for the funeral.
