Rob Edwards vs Michael Carrick

Edwards is good and is making a real name for himself but it’s not exaggerating to say we’ve currently got the hottest young prospect in English football. I wouldn’t swap Carrick for anybody right now.
lets see what happens this coming season without certain key loan players

At the time my preference list was Corberan first, Edwards second and Carrick "maybe". I felt that Corberan had the experience we needed to turn around the squad and develop it but maybe there was a risk that he wouldn't work well with a head of football. Edwards had some experience but had the advantage of (in my eyes) of being seemingly keen to work with Scott plus he preferred playing 3 at the back which was what we had been recruiting for. Carrick felt a bit like Gibson obsessing about first-time managers with good playing careers and had the look of a Frank Lampard type of appointment. Clearly I was wrong; I hadn't spotted that, like Karanka, Carrick had done a few years of being an apprentice.

That said, I think at the end of the season, Carrick's inexperience may have cost us.

I could see that Gibson would have been concerned by Edwards' departure from Forest Green Rovers and, allied, to his indifferent start with Watford it was reasonable to wary of him. Corberan has had mixed results with WBA and may have continued the tension between manager and club.

Carrick has shown the potential to manage at the top of the game but he is learning on the job. If we had appointed Edwards or Corberan would we have done better? That's pretty much up there with asking if my aunty had wheels would she be a scooter. I suspect that Edwards is going to prove to be a Premier-league quality manager with a style that focuses on hard-working, organised, direct play. If they recruit well, Luton could surprise a few teams next year and grind out just enough points to stay up.

In honesty, its all opinions, I wouldnt swap Carrick for either of the above, I do agree that he has been done tactically on a few occassions this year, however that is to be expected as he is learning his trade and will be better for the lessons.

Some of the football we ha e played this year has been fantatstic and I would not want to become a team just hoofing the ball wheather thats pur strengths or not I want to play football, that being said I do want us to be diverse and utilise a different option when required which we have done at times.

Edwards & Coberan are very much in the Dyche mold of football which is effective with the right players but I prefer the way we are trying to play.

Lets not forget Carrick come in and picked up Wilders team, he has brought in one permanent player the other 2 where loans, this summer is his chance to really stamp his style on the team and if we can be clever in the transfer market and get business one early we will be a very difficult team to play against next year.

On another note another team who will be a good side next year will be Hull, very impressed with Rosenior as a manager too!

Dale Vince, the Forest Green Chairman on Rob Edwards: “He's not our manager anymore. I feel disappointed with him, let down. Watford encouraged him not to tell us. We move on." [ via

“Overwhelmingly for me the feeling was disappointment, because in football people come and go all of the time. The important thing is the manner of it.
“I wish him well, but it is poor from Watford, who claim to be starting a new era, and it is poor from Rob as well.
“He has let us down, but he knows it, so there it is, and we will move on.”

I agree. Carrick has overseen some of the most complete football we've seen at the Riverside and has been a breath of fresh air. It feels like he could go all the way to the top as a coach.

That said, a part of me wonders if we had gone with Edwards whether he might have got us promoted. We wouldn't have had the 5 game transition with Leo and a large part of our improvement was, as it turned out, simply getting Wilder off the premises.

Clearly, at that point, no one knew if Edwards just had a purple patch at FGR plus the manner in which he left was pretty sketchy so there were reasons to be wary about him.

Edwards has made a virtue of putting out hard-working, fit, hard-to-play against sides and the one thing we have often been criticised for is having a soft centre. We wouldn't have scored as many goals under him but we would have kept a lot more clean sheets. Those extra five games to turn things around without Wilder stinking out the place would have made a difference. It's all speculation now. If we had got Carrick in 5 games earlier perhaps we would have been looking at 2nd place realistically.

I'm glad we have Carrick. I think, as they say, that his "ceiling" is higher than Edwards and although not getting promoted this season is a sickner it may work out for the best if he gets another season of learning his trade in the Championship.

Leo got 7 points in those 5 games.
Even if Carrick had got 15 points we would still have finished 8 points behind 2nd place.

Another way to think about though. Carrick got 46 points in his first 20 games. If, in a parallel world, he had taken over straight away after Wilder then, on the 11th February, after playing Cardiff we would have been on 56 points, 5 points behind Sheffield Utd. We then played Utd and beat them, putting us on 59 points and them on 61. That's a whole different dynamic because we are now close to level pegging with nearly 1/3 of the season still to go. One of us or them would have crumbled because now there's real pressure on second place.

It's all ifs and buts but still, having those 5 extra games could have made a significant difference.

Personally, I think Michael Carrick is the real deal and will get us automatic promotion next season. I think/hope he will then have a maximum of 2 seasons in establishing us as a mid table Premiership club before moving on to become a top coach at the highest level.
After the disappointment of the play offs, I think it will turn out to be a blessing as he will now have more time (under the media radar) of creating his own squad/team without all the Premiership hype.
Exciting times.

It depends what you want from your club. After the last few seasons of **** football this season has been a blessing. I don't mind the championship but I know as a club we need to go up for the money.

I wouldn't swap Premier league football for Lutons squad or Edwards football.

Next season is more about recruitment for me, I know we can trust Carrick. We fell short because of the squad depth for me
