Rodri remarks about Gibraltar

Apparently Man City's Rodri has caused something of a diplomatic incident with remarks about Gibraltar in his celebrations back in Spain. I do hope opposition fans in the PL take note of this next season.
Why?

It’s a funny one isn’t it?
Rodri has a view about Gibraltar, shares it, then gets slated by others who are very keen to share their view.

Different views - that’s all it is.
We all have views.
Perhaps we might be more considered about when, where and how we express them.
He deserves what he is about to get in terms of views shared.

I think some people are being a bit precious tbh. Who really cares?

The people of Gibraltar, they're the ones complaining.

A nation of 38,000 people, bordered by a nation of 48 million that they indisputably don't want to be a part of.

It's obviously going to get their backs up if Spanish players are leading chants in the streets of Madrid effectively calling for Gibraltar to be annexed by Spain.

Oh ok I admit I didn't know all that(y)

He might get a bit of comedy booing at the start of the season but I don’t think the vast majority of fans are deeply offended by his celebratory remarks

It’s a strange thing for a bunch of footballers to chant after just winning one of the biggest games of their careers.

I much prefer Three Lions.

In fairness to them, they'll have 100% heard the knuckledragging England fans chanting "Gibraltar is ours" etc in the build up to the match, and it'll be a reaction to that.

I don't think it just popped in to their heads out of nowhere.

Gibraltar is a legacy from the British Empire when we wanted naval control of the entrance to the Med and a stop off port on the way to Africa and beyond. When navies made you a world power it was always useful if we wanted to be a Global player.

Today it does look a bit of an oddity - a little bit of Britain stuck on the southern tip of Spain. The validity of a Referendum is defined by who is allowed to vote particularly where the boundaries are drawn. The same of course could be said for the Spanish cities in North Africa.

Any comments by Rodri are hardly going to cause a political meltdown, or force Spanish forces into action.

In reality, it was probably done in response to foolish English chanting, and emotions running high having just beaten an English speaking team.

Gibraltar being a British Overseas Territory is quite bizarre, but I’m told people who live there don’t see it that way. Similar to those living in the Falklands.

I agree in a perfect world we would all be considered ….

He was giddy after winning the euros celebrating in front of millions and said something he has never (as far as I know) said before in public.
He’s said something daft

Nothings going to change, Gibraltar isn’t going back to Spain, he isn’t going to change his view

But - pile on to show anger?

He doubled down when reminded he played in England. It was not a short episode.

He will get plenty when he returns.

I attended a conference recently that had someone running the health service in Gibraltar giving a presentation. It was interesting but it is a strange situation. Gibraltar doesn't have enough people in it to be self-sufficient so everything has to come across the border from Spain and the primary commodity is low paid workers because they can't afford to live in Gibraltar. Half the working population come into Gibraltar each day.

The whole referendum on them wanting to be British/Independent/Not Spanish seems a bit hypocritical as well because we don't let parts of the UK become independent just because they want to. Spain equally don't because they have several regions like catalonia that want to be independent but aren't allowed. It's one of those things that is clearly beneficial to us in some way and now even though it doesn't make sense for us to claim them as "ours" we are unable to back down.

He's right though. WTF is the UK doing still hanging on to a lump of the Spanish mainland thanks to a treaty dating back to 1713? If it was Spain controlling Landsend wouldn't we be arguing the same?
Depends on what the local inhabitants wanted..
No time for nationalism we're just one small planet..
